Reproductive Endocrinologist in EDMONTON, ALBERTA!
EDMONTON, ALBERTA:
This is the Reproductive Endocrinologist/fertility specialist that identified my PCOS immediately (as compared to the TONS of doctors over the years that tried to tell me that all my problems were just related to weight gain and/or didn't even know what PCOS was!):
Dr. Josef Scott
Regional Fertility & Women's Endrocrine Clinic
138 Community Services Centre
Royal Alexandra Hospital
10240 Kingsway Avenue
Edmonton, Alberta
T5H 3V9
PHONE: (780) 491-5609 or (780) 477-4130
UPDATE: Dr. Scott unfortunately passed away. Now his referrals are going to Dr. Sagle in the same clinic! Dr. Sagle is a female endocrinologist and I've heard wondeful things about her!

The Dr that diagnosed me has now retired, but my best PCOS advocate since then has been my GP Dr Dallas Popick (Cumberland Medical Clinic). I am a VERY informed PCOS patient and he is the first physican I have found who knew as much as I did. He is up to date on the studies and was patient with the meds as they did their thing. His is a very busy clinic and practice but his goals have matched mine in this journey.
On the contrary, I want to let you ladies know about 2 Dr's I found to be very niave about PCOS: Dr Yeboah (OB/GYN_Wall Street) and Dr Khandwala (Endo - Royal University Hospital).
I saw Dr Y in 1999. I had heard rumors of his bad bedside manner, but gave him a chance after he delievered my daughter in 1996. I had let my beard grow out for my appointment, and he wouldn't look at my face when I asked him to. When he did an internal exam, he asked me if I was constipated (That is relevant?!) After my labs came back, I asked him if I had PCOS and he looked at only my FSH:LH ratio and told me flat out I did NOT have PCOS. My next physician diagnosed me after running my testosterone and free androgen which were several times higher than normal.
I saw Dr Hasnain Khandwala at Royal Univ. Hosp in 2001. He does not treat PCOS unless you are TTC and tried to take me OFF Metformin (the only thing that had improved my condition)because I wasn't trying to have a baby. The appt ended with him asking ME questions about Insulin resistance.
So I suggest if you are referred to these gentlemen, that you get another referral. I don't intend to bad mouth either of them, but rather to help you to find more informed Physicians on PCOS.

I am seeing Dr. Opgenorth at the UofA in Edmonton, AB. She is great is very willing to help, explain and Listen. My GP is Dr. n. Sprague in Leduc. I find that she is a great resource and very understanding. She also used to work at the UofA so seems to have many contacts. I have yet to find a question that stumps her, though I will keep trying.

There is another wonderful doctor in Saskatoon, SK and HER name is Dr. Thurza Smith, #300-149 Pacific Avenue North, Saskatoon. She is an OB/GYN and basically diagnosed me just by looking at me and my charts from my doctor. Of course, she had to examine me, ultrasound, blood tests etc. but that pretty much just satisfied her that she and I were right! My GP at home seemed to think I was just hormonal (yeesh - men...) and that the facial hair was probably hereditary. Can you believe that? I told him it was hereditary for my brother but not for me! Anyway, Dr. Smith has me on Metformin, I've just started and am only taking one pill per day, soon to two and then to 3 per day. I can't wait to get some sort of normal cycle happening - although it's been many years since I've been "normal" that I forget what it's like!
DH was just talking to OHIP as he heard from his step-mom that a hospital in Ottawa covers IVF.
So he called OHIP and she gave him a number of Toronto Western where they cover IUI and IVF is you have bi-lateral blocked tubes.
She also told me to give them a call just in case things have changed since. They may be able to provide other assistance as well. It is definetely worth the call I think. Here is the number if anyone is interested 416-340-4713.
Hope this helps anyone.
Jenn

I am seeing a fertility specialist at the Victoria Fertility Clinic. Dr. Hudson. Was refered there by my regular doc (Dr. Nicol) since he suspected (and tested for) PCOS but was reluctant to diagnose due to not having a lot of experience with it (made me respect him a lot)
At my first app. Dr Hudson diagnosed me and prescribed Met and asked me to cut back my carbs. WAY more than ANY doc had done for my amenorrhea ever before, which impressed me. On a bonus note, he is a fertility specialist, so by becoming a patient for the PCOS, I am already a patient now that weare needing more fertility treatment.

Feeling better and better every day.
Ladies, Today I found the best doc I have ever seen! I also see Dr. Scott in Edmonton at the fertility clinic, but this doc has an even better understanding of PCOS than he (IMO). She also has PCOS and totally understands the heartaches that accompany this lovely syndrome. She is very progressive and I didn't have to try and convince her of anything.
Her name is:
Dr. Badi and her office is in the Cooperators Square in Grande Prairie. The best news is that she just moved here from Ottawa and is establishing her practice, so you don't even need a referral to see her and it only takes a week!
