Yes, you need a referral, but I don't know if it will get you Dr. Laredo. I asked for a referral to Dr. Laredo and they made me an appointment with Dr. Blake instead. I'm still optimistic - I go on October 10th.
Wondering if anyone has any recommendations for an endocrinologist in Vancouver. My physician will be sending a referral next week so if I let her know who I want to see then she will send it. I just don't want to drive 3+ hours & over the Coquihalla during the winter to meet with an inept idiot.
TIA!
I never do this ... write on walls but i need some serious help; i'm about to lose my mind.
I moved to Calgary from Toronto about a year ago. on the pill or patch my periods were fine. When we got to Calgary i decied to go off them and just very recently got a family doctor.
I was Diagnosed late september with PCOS from my new fam. doc she told me she's send me to all sorts of specialists and it wouldn't be any problems, well by the middle of oct i still had not heard back from her on even the dates of the appts. it's now the middle of nov and i keep calling back and i get the same answer... the doctor is on holidays and what's wrong with you? why do you need help? I have not seen, heard, spoken or any other form of communication with anyone who can help me. So far all i know is what i've found online and the fam. doc put me on 1000mg(?) of Met. oh, and i've learned the very hard way if i eat to many carbs i'm in serious pain for atleast 12 hours... but i have no one to help me.
My main problem is i'm a veggitarin, i don't know what to eat. what to do or who to get help from... i'm not from calgary and if i can't get help i will go anywhere in north america to get it.
I'm looking for a family doctor, endo, fert.spec. anyone that has some bedside manor and likes to help.
Very very desperatly seeking help.
Veg.
any info is better than whant i have....nothing...
Well to answer my own question...
Dr. Jennifer Klinke & Dr. Julie Lee
are two female endocrinologists in New Westminster who sent out letters to the physicians of BC promoting referrals for women with PCOS. My doctor was very happy that she received this timely letter expressing their interest in PCOS.
I have a whack of b/w to do for them and I 'm not scheduled to meet with them till February but if my meeting is successful I'll be happy to update my fellow BC cysters.
Hey Ladies!!
Well, I have been to my fair share of doctors, and still feel like I havent found the right one. I just went to see Dr Wang in Newmarket, but wasn't too impressed. I have been diagnosed with PCOS by another endocrinologist in Mississauga, and also by my naturopath..which was mentioned on here...Her name is Shawna Darou and she is in Toronto. I would like to talk to others who have seen Shawna.
Also, Dr. Wang doesnt think I even have pcos...just an acne problem...I was really upset at my appointment and although he was trying to be kind, I felt very very discouraged. I know my body best and I truly believe I have pcos..I have had acne since the age of 11, my scalp hair is thinning, i have a string of pearl of cysts on my ovary and before i was on the pill my LH was 9 and my FSH was 3..im pretty sure that these are some pretty concrete symptoms...
anyways, im still on the hunt for another endocrinologist, as Dr Wang would not prescribe me spiro.
Thanks'
Hey, we're in the same neck of the woods, BeetleGirl! That's nifty!!!
Please let me know how it goes with those doctors. I'm having an impossible time trying to find anyone that's very knowledgeable or friendly here. There was one ob/gyn who diagnosed me but I found him to be very full of himself and unfriendly. Then the next one (from the same office, since there's only a few here) couldn't even look me in the face because of my size. I cried for days after meeting with her. Thank goodness my regular doctor is so supportive, even though he's just in a clinic.
He directed me to pacificfertility.ca. I've glanced but haven't really looked indepth yet.

Hey Evilbee,
My appt is curently booked for February but I am going to see if they can reschedule me for March.
As for infertility clinics, meet with as many as possible.
Coming from Toronto, with years of ttc experiencing I had some knowledge and found that many of the clinics in Vancouver were lacking the experience and knowledge that I had found at the Eastern clinics. I opted to go with the clinic on the island. All was good for our FET cycle then dh & I were dropped from there patient data base. We are too complex case and will destroy their high success rates. It's quite frustrating for us when the clinics on the mainland weren't able to meet our ago.
Please learn from my mistakes and do lots of research, become familiar with every test, procedure, and medication available and challenge your doctor. They are there for you(and when you are paying for their services) they need to have your best interest in mind(not there next Carribean time share). Anyways, just my two cents. Good Luck & I'll update when I can.
Hi everyone. i can almost cry tears of joy at finding you guys. i dont know if anyone else has had this problem, but i have been totaly dismissed by the doctors here in ottawa ontario. I have a super family doctor Dr Sweet, but he is out of his element when it comes to the pcos. The last obgyn i saw did an u\s, saw cysts on my ovaries and actually told me to just take 2 advil adn id be ok. I am sick of feeling like i cant get any help anywhere. Does anyone know of a pcos clinic here in ottawa or have a super doc that wont take me 4 months to get into see? ANY help at this point would be super.
thanks,
Suzi
Dr. Pattinson is the BEST!!! He diagnosed me with PCOS in Dec. 05, and after meds and ovarian cautery and a LOT of prayer, we conceived a beautiful baby girl, who is now 9 months!

Dr.Wilson , you will need a referral , he is great . I have good things about his partners as well , Dr.Hartman , Dr.Bagdan (not sure of the spelling )
Update...
So I met with Dr. Lee today...and things went well.
She was worth the drive from Kelowna to New Westminster.
Things haven't changed much as far as PCOS goes, so I have remained on typical treatment upping my doses of Glumetza and finally starting Vaniqua(which I wasn't aware was now available in Canada)
However, depending on how things go over the next year, we may try another route. She definately was not afraid to think outside the box, and though she was not familiar of some of the treatment plans I suggested, she also wasn't afraid to try them.
If you are in BC and looking for good endo, I would highly recommend the trip to New Westminster to meet with the only PCOS competent doctor I have met since moving west.
UPDATE #2
After all, my appointment wasn't as great as I thought. The Vaniqa I was told was available is not and the doctors solution is to drive 3 hours to the nearest pharmacy in the U.S. and get my prescription filled. She had promised me Flutamide in a years time, if things didn't work with the Vaniqa and when the time came because I couldn't get Vaniqa, she refused to prescribe me Flutamide and didn't offer any other options(which I later learned by another endocrinologist there are many). That to me is very disappointing.
I also met a few weeks later with another doctor for other reasons and will be following up with him for my PCOS. He is awesome, knowledgable and willing to think outside the box. There's another post further down, or on another page.
