My mom was diagnosed in 1999 with breast cancer, which was an estrogen receptor positive tumor. That year she had to undergo a lumpectomy, radiation, and chemotherapy treatment for the cancer - all of this was a success. She had been cancer-free for almost 7 years, but earlier this year another bomb dropped. She was diagnosed with bone metastasis, and the doctors can only speculate since a spinal tap found the same cells as the estrogen positive tumor, that this has been something left over from the breast cancer, stirring up for the past couple of years.
For the last 6 months she has gone through hormonal treatment - they induced menopause to stop the production of hormones, and she's been going for bone strenghtening treatment (Zometa, and also another drug) to counteract the damage the cancer has caused to many parts of her body: jaw, ribs, right femur, right hip, pelvis, and spine. From a bone scan this past Monday, she was advised that her body is not responding to the current treatment. It isn't working. Next Monday she will meet with her oncologist to discuss pending CT results, a prognosis, and further options for treatment.
Please pray for her. Pray as hard as you can to give her the strength to make it through this difficult time.

My thoughts and prayers are with her and your family. I pray that God brings her peace and comfort and he put his healing hands on her. Stay strong, I really hope things will get better. Keep us updated on her. I will be praying for her!! (((HUGS)))
Thank you so much everyone! Someone messaged me and asked what her name is. Her name is Mary. Ironic, no?
She just started a pill form of chemo this week. Apparently the pill form is supposed to be heart and organ friendly, much more so than the IV form. She isn't supposed to lose her hair either, which is making her happy (ah, the little things that get us by....). The only side effect is a serious rash, but she is in good spirits and happy to trade sickness of the old chemo for the rash of the new.
I will update again as I am informed at home...
Thanks again!

I will remember your mom in my prayers. My mom was dianosed with stage 3 lung cancer in June 2004. She was 71 and underwent radiation but her body couldn't tolerate the chemo. She was then given a lobectomy in March of this year. She is still hanging in there, so I know how difficult it is for you and your mom. Prayers for you both.
Mom is doing fine as of right now. Her oncologist is sending her for radiation to help with the pain in her right hip & femur, and also her spine. She will go for 13 treatments total. She is continuing with the chemo pills and has had little or no side effects (I think in the beginning it was some very faint nausea but that's it). She is, however, losing all of her hair not due to chemo but the hormone therapy which has induced menopause prematurely. She is in high spirits and continues to voice her determination to beat the cancer. I am really very proud of her - she is so so incredibly brave with strength and courage that I cannot even begin to describe. I think her positive outlook helps the rest of us in the family, myself especially, as we struggle ourselves with the reality of what she is fighting and the helplessness of not being able to make things better for her.
Her next bone scan is in January and apparently this is how the cycle will continue, scans of some sort every 3 months. Her most recent CT scan came back unremarkable, which is great news. I am praying now for a happy and healthy holiday season.
So again, so far so good. I thank everyone who has checked in with me and the showering of prayers she has received. I am so appreciative and grateful for all of your support!
