I'm going for a D & C Wednesday. I really didn't want to go this route, but with a vacation and finals coming up, I can't risk being knocked out of commission by a miscarriage.
I am a bit nervous about the whole thing- the worst medical procedure I've had is stitches (knock on wood). I also have a low pain threshold (though now I know Im going to be in pain either way). The doc says I will be fine for a 5 hour plane ride the following day.
Can you please answer these?
1. Did Versed really make you forget the experience? Can you fall asleep from the drugs they give you? Did they really put you at ease? I'm scared I'll get jumpy and make him perforate my uterus.
2. Did it hurt? Was it terribly unpleasant?
3. How long did the procedure take?
4. Did you get sick from the drugs?
5. How do you feel afterward?
4. How were the after effects of the drugs

I can't help you with your questions about a D&C because I didn't have one with my m/c. I know other ladies will be able to give you some answers though. I just wanted to let you know how sorry I am that you are going through this right now. (((((hugs)))))

Hi Seneca: No need to get to worried about the D&C...it is a fairly easy procedure as far as procedures go. You will be under a general anesthetic so you won't feel a thing. When you wake you will probably be very groggy and achey. They will give you something for the pain if you need. With my experience they made me get up and have a little something to eat and drink shortly after coming to. Everyone responds differently from being under but I have always been fine. The actual procedure is quite quick maybe about a half an hour. I also found that I was a little achey for a few days after, mostly like period cramps. You will also have bleeding after, again like having a period but it could last up to 2 weeks. If there is anything else you would like to know just ask. Good luck
I'm sorry to hear that you have to have a d&c. I had one on Feb 8th of this year. My experience was really like Sherry's. The day of I hurt a little once the painkillers wore off and I stayed out of work the next day. It's hard for me to distinguish between the grieving and the physical pain but by the 2nd day after I was up and about.
the procedure itself was easy- the hard part was sitting and waiting to be taken into the OR.
The nurses were all great- they were sad with me about the d&c.
I was surprised by how quickly it was over.
I hope it goes smoothly for you too..
Wendy

I had to have a D&C on Feb 8th of this year. I found out the baby had died on the 5th after going to the ER because of some slight bleeding--I would have been 11 weeks along. I asked at the hospital if they could give me the procedure there in the ER, but the doc said I had to wait it out and see if I miscarried on my own. I didn't think that was fair at all...how come women can abort healthy babies, but I can't get a dead one out of me? Days later, I went to my OB/GYN and she said I hadn't dilated at all, so she did the procedure that day.
It wasn't TOO bad, but it is surgery. They gave me the drugs right before they wheeled me in to the OR, and I was completely out right after we got into the room. I hate the feeling of anesthesia...I have a hard time waking up. It's like when you are having a dream and you are trying to wake up in the dream, but your eyes won't cooperate. I felt a little woozy, but not that bad. They also made me eat something...crackers...and have a little water before I could leave.
I was in a little bit of a daze afterward, but honestly, I wasn't in much pain. It was much worse before the procedure, because I had been cramping and bleeding a lot for several days. Afterwards, there was no more cramping, and only a slight pink discharge for a few days.
I think you'll be fine the next day for travelling, if a little bit out of it. The whole thing can take a while to hit you, that it's happened to you. Best of luck to you, you'll be in my thoughts.
I've only heard of ONE person having a D&C awake before...I would ask to be given a general. The story I heard was a bad one and I don't want to scare you.
I'm sorry sweetie.

No, no, no!!! I was totally awake....and it was FINE! Matter of fact, my dh was sititng right next to me the whole time...which took all of like 10 minutes, max. I was given something via IV that looped me up, sort of like feeling like I had 3 or 4 glasses of wine. I was totally awake and relaxed. I did cramp during the "dustin' and a cleanin'"...and only spotted afterwards for a day or so. I took Ibuprofen that day and the day after and that was IT!
You will be so fine....seriously....you will be so fine!

I had a D&C on dec 05, i was put to sleep with some kind of injection, given anti biotics etc after i woke up, no pain at all because was totally asleep.
I had a D&C back in October. I was asleep. When I woke up, I stayed in the recovery area for a while with an IV in me. They gave me ginger ale and crackers and I went home. I had period like bleeding for a little more than a week, and very little pain. Honestly, I had more pain the few days before the procedure. Emotionally I was a mess but physically, it wasn't any worse than a period. You'll be fine.
I'll be thinking about you.

Today is the day of your D&C, isn't it Seneca? Just wanted to let you know that I am thinking of you today. My D&C for my 3rd m/c was April 5, 2002. I was out for my whole procedure. Afterward, my heart hurt worse than my body did. My dr. gave me some mild painkillers for the pain, but I barely took any - Ibuprofen was fine, since there wasn't a whole lot of cramping or pain, just some bleeding. But, the emotional pain was worse, and harder to get through. I'm keeping you in my thoughts & prayers today, and let me know if there's anything I can do to help you get through this time.
Just wanted to say that I am remembering you in my prayers today.
((((hugs))))

That is so sweet of everyone. The D&C went fine- and they did end up putting me under. I was under for a whole 25 minutes. I have a little bit of bleeding and my guts hurt a little, and thats it.
I made the right decision to have this done. I'm happy I can put this behind me without waiting to miscarry, and without worrying about infection.
The worst part of the whole procedure was the mix of nerves, anxiety and emotions I was feeling for a few hours prior.

Hi there. I'm glad you made the right decision for you to get this surgery done. I always felt a little bit better after my D&C's because it meant that my body was on its way to physically healing itself and that I could focus on the mental aspect.
I wish you well as you recover physically and emotionally. We're here ready to listen to you whenever you need to vent or just talk about your feelings. (((Hugs)))
