I hate to be a pest but I posted this before and got no responses. I dont want to start this without someone giving me there thoughts so that i feel better about this and it gives me a little more confidance with it.
A little about me: 18 years old, 4'11'', 180lbs (proud to say at my most i was almost 190lbs), just starting supplements
Does this sound good? Would you add, take away or change anything?
-Women's One A Day Vitamin
-Flaxseed Oil, will be switching to fish oil, 1000mg- 1tab 2 to 3 times a day
-Chromium Picolinate 500mg 1 tab a day
-Inositol 500mg starting with 1 tab a day, then after seeing how i feel adding one extra tab at a time
-Super B Complex with Folic Acid, Vitamin C and Biotin 1 tab a day
TIA! =]

Hi Kattie,
Everything your taking looks awesome. Are you taking any insulin sensitizers? If you don't want to take Metformin, Cinnamon is supposed to be a great natural alternative. Most women I've seen on here take about 2000 mg.
You may also want to read previous threads on Vitex, many have found it helps regulate.
Also, I would suggest adding some Vitamin D3 as well. 2000units is what my docs have recommended to me.
What are some of your PCOS symptoms you have?

I was diagnosed earlier this summer, so I understand your need to get the right list of supplements. Recently I started with a wonderful acupuncturist and I'm loving it, the treatments and the Chinese medicine. Great to know about the cinnamon!
The only thing I would suggest is adding Choline along with your Inositol. It's a complementary supplement that's been shown to enhance/work well with the Inositol.
My starting dosage was one Choline (either 250 or 500mg ea) with every dose of Inositol, not going over 1500mg/day (can cause stomach problems). Also, are you taking the Inositol in a capsule (loose powder inside a gel cap) or tablet (solid pill - like your vitamine) form? If it's the solid tablet, I HIGHLY suggest looking for the capsules when you finish your current bottle. Not only do the tablets not get absorbed as well, but many people have reported bathroom issues with the tablets that disappeared once they went to the capsules.

Samie: My PCOS symptoms are weight, excess hair, difficulty losing weight and acne. I'm not IR as of my last blood test in April-ish.
Randomdaydream: good luck with figuring everything out. I was diagnosed in Jan of 09. The last 10 months or so have been some of the most challenging but very much real life and self discovery
Lexibelle: Right now its the solid tablet. Do you mix the powder with water? If not i will have to stick with the tablet because certain textures of foods and such make me sick. (I cant eat ricotta cheese or tomatoes)
I want to get healthy as soon as possible because i am hoping to have a baby within the next two years. do any of you ladies have issues with weight and did/do you do anythng besides diet and excercise to help with weight loss?

Katie,
If you've always had an issue with weight since puberty, you may be insulin resistant, but it just hasn't gotten to the point where it will show up on any bloodwork, especially if you have elevated androgens (excess hair and acne is generally a symptom of this).
Most docs assume insulin resistance can be found with a simple blood test, but it really can't, because in most cases, its a cellular receptor site abnormality and can take years to get to the point where it shows up on bloodwork that tests specifically for excess insulin. This is what both of my docs have explained to me for the last 7-8 yrs.
Basically the cells in your body don't pick up enough insulin and there's extra in your body, messing with your entire endocrine system.
Definitely look into Ceylon Cinnamon supplements. If you start taking that, and start excercising (don't know if you do or not) and follow a diet that decreases your caloric intake, and reduces simple carbs and sugar, and you start losing weight easier, then you very well may be IR.
HTH

Actually, I was referring to the pills that are gel-caps filled with the powder. You take them the same way you take the tablets - they just dissolve better in your stomach. I never messed with the powder.
I definitely had weight issues (well, still have - got pregnant before I could get to my goal weight...whoops), and the Inositol/Choline combination actually made the diet and exercise method work, for the first time in my life. Prior to getting pregnant I'd lost 60lbs in 9 months, so not bad.

Samie: Thank you so much for that very valuable info. I was actually quite suprised when they told me i wasnt IR. I have diabetes on both side so it kind of shocked me. I thought hard about the blood test they gave me, i had so many, and it was a fasting glucose level and thats how they determined it.
Lexibelle: I must have misread. The tablets i have are from GNC. What kinds of places can you get the gel ones from? I have found that not to many local places have even the tablets of inositol. Once you started loosing the weight you lost (congrats) did AF start coming on its own?
Sorry to be such a pest. I just have so many questions and have a hard time getting into my OB/GYN. Is it possible that a nutritionist or dietician could be more helpful to me while i want to loose weight before starting ttc?
Thank you so much ladies!

I initially found the Inositol at Whole Foods and then alter found them at a local Health Food store. You can also order them online from Vitamin Shoppe, I believe. GNC seems to be the only place that doesn't carry the type I prefer. When you're out looking, just make sure the bottle says capsule (that'll give you what you want). You definitely won't find them at places like pharmacies or grocery stores.
Actually, the results in regards to AF are amazing. Prior to starting the Inositol I'd spent most of 2008 with various levels of spotting but no AF. I started the Inositol/Choline in mid-November and the spotting stopped within about two weeks. Then in December I had my first AF - and I believe I'd only lost about 15lbs by that point. After that I had AF every 28-35 days like clockwork while I was continuing to lose the weight and taking the Inositol. My experience seems fairly normal, as many of the other women who are taking the right dosage of Inositol and following the proper lifestyle had an AF within a month or so of starting their programs.

Thank you so much. I am taking my last BCP tonight and will be starting taking the supps. I want to take the "bulk" of my pills at night and then the "extra" ones a few hours after waking. Have you ever heard of that? I think i will remember better this way because i did the BCP at night. I would think that this is ok seeing as where its just the opposite of what most people would do.
Samie: CONGRATS!
Lexibelle: I see your ticker says its time to find out the sex. Did you choose to find out or keep it a suprise?

The only issue with taking your vitamins in the evening, is if you see it is starting to interfere with your sleeping. Then you might want to move the "vitamins" back to morning. HTH! Good luck!

Hey Kattiej! Congrats on finding this message board. I wanted to share a funny story with you all. I've been taking inositol and choline for the past 2 wks now with amazing results. One morning I forgot to take my supps, didn't have time to take them at lunch and decided at dinner that i'd just take them all before I go to sleep. Now, mind you, these vitamins really perk me up. I'm so awake and alert on theses supps. So right before I go down for the night I take my supps and hit the pillow. This is around 9. A couple hours later I start cheering and clappin and yelling "woo hoo! That's what I'm talkin about!" My husband jumps up like "what are you talkin about girl!?" I was talking in my sleep! So I go back to sleep but had the most vivid dreams for the rest of the night. Pretty entertaining. LOL! So I would not advise anyone to take the bulk of these vits right before bed. :-)
