I went to my Md today hopeful for some Metformin. She said no, that she only uses that for diabetic patients. But that she was proud of me for doing the research. I gave her the info about Metformin helping patients with PCOS, she SAID shed read it. When I was diagnosed, they found out through ultrasound that I had a bzillion cysts, but she said all my blood work was 'normal'. I have all the symptoms of PCOS and Insulin Resistance but it didnt show on my blood work 2 years ago. I have the dark skin on my neck, I get dizzy and sick if I dont eat in a certain amount of time. I have central obesity and skin tags. And can't lose weight past 30 lbs. She was reluctant to retest me because I had lost weight, she said my results would be even better. But I am getting retested tomorrow.
Here are the questions I seriously need some answers to:
1. Can you NOT be insulin resistant even if you have the dark ring, skin tags???
2. Do any of you take Metformin and are not insulin resistant or diabetic???
3. Can blood work be wrong and if so, why?

I take metformin w/o a dx of IR or diabetes. I have read that most women with PCOS are probably IR to some extent whether it shows up on testing or not. I believe that there are MANY women on here who take metformin wether IR or not.
Good luck to you! You may want to consider finding a doctor who has extensive knowledge in PCOS.

I take met and have never been properly tested for IR. It has helped so much with my periods, ovulation and boils.
Meds you are on can screw up test results such as BCP's.
Are you on any meds?

My advise is change doctors! Many doctors are like yours. Second opinions are always advisable anyway. You need to find a doctor who will treat PCOS aggressively. Ask around here to see if anyone knows a doctor where you live.
I think at the time I was on an antidepressant. Maybe Lexapro. Thank you guys! I think I may just have to beg for a referral to an endo that knows something.

I would definantely change doctors. That should be #1 on your list. Met seems like it is a drug that helps alot with PCOS, also I dont think that anything else besides IR has the symptoms of skin tags and dark patches. I have both and am IR. Is this doc a gyn or an endo?

Change doctors! Change doctors! Change doctors! The only sure fire way to test for IR is with a glucose tolerance test. That is done by drinking the nasty orange drink they give pregnant women to test for gestational diabetes, waiting 2 hours and checking your insulin levels. IR can not be diagnosed with just a blood test--all that does is tell you if you are already diabetic, not pre-diabetic. Insulin is basically the glucose taxis for our bodies. IR is when your body's insulin does not go grab the glucose for processing quickly like it is supposed to. Diabetes is when your body has quit producing enough insulin to process the glucose period. Within 1-2 hours after eating high sugar foods, your insulin should have already processed the glucose and your levels should be back to normal-and someone with normal insulin levels will barely have any change in the blood glucose because their body processes it so quickly. The worse the IR gets, the farther out of range your glucose levels will become, till eventually you quit making the insulin and become diabetic. If your doctor doesn't know this, then she is a quack.....sorry.......

Cuz we are trying to get preg. we have been trying for over a year and my primary doc. alwayz p ut me down about everything..So i went and got 2nd advice from an Ob/Gyn and she even toldm e that my primary doc. was a quack. So she is gonna put me on the med. to help us out.....My primary doc. was kinda like urs ...she didnt wanna help me out at all...And when she pound out i went to an Ob/Gyn she was mad. Everything my primary doc. told me wasnt true at all...she told me there was nothing to help us get preg. But Acrowe I would go and get some advice from an ob/gyn i am sure they will help you.

You need to find a doctor who will treat PCOS aggressively.
Bingo, I did that and got the results was needed, cauterization of massive amounts of scar tissue, endo, and full blown cysts via laparoscopy-AND Ovarian Drilling, and that's pretty aggressive!
In answers to your questions, my answers are only from what I've learned/experienced...
1. Can you NOT be insulin resistant even if you have the dark ring, skin tags??? I believe so, yes.
2. Do any of you take Metformin and are not insulin resistant or diabetic??? I was on it, and I'm not Diabetic (waiting to be tested by an endo), and not considered IR, it's natural, alternative, low carb, exercise, sleep and water for my controlling of my PCOS.
3. Can blood work be wrong and if so, why? I have learned through this site that hormones and their labwork can be different, not necessarily wrong, but different-depending upon the time they're done. Ex- before, during after AF, or ovulation.
The only sure fire way to test for IR is with a glucose tolerance test.
Hey is that really true??? I had a GTT two years ago, and that's what I'm waiting to have done. Through my bloodwork, and my bloodwork ONLY recently, my doc said I wasn't IR....so I'm soing to an endo in a few weeks.
Makes me wonder, I thought a GTT only Dx Diabetes?
I just started met and i haven't taken any tests for IR, my endo put me on it I go to him for my thyroid, and he tests my tsh and stuff for my Graves, but he treats pcos and I finally talked him into letting me take it, we want to lost weight and get a period, so he started me on it when my liver enzymes lowered a bit. So, if you get a dr that know it helps with pcos, they will probably give it to you to treat that, if not for actual IR. But I agree, most women with pcos probably have IR to a degree. My pcos was actually dx by symptoms and then she did an u/s to confirm, so sometimes they can just tell. If they are used to treating those things so finding another dr would help too. Good luck
