I guess I'm a bit prolific, but I always have to cut out stuff from my private messages or send more than one. 1000 characters isn't much, and while I know that it probably makes the board more slow, it sure would be nice if we had a higher limit (or no limit at all!).
I did a search and didn't see any other threads on this topic, so I apologize if this has been posted before. I was just curious as to why the character limit is so small. I could understand if it was a file size limit, so we didn't send a lot of pictures etc., but does text take up that much space/bandwidth?

It's not all that small. PM isn't supposed to take the place of email.
If you multiply the 1000 character limit per PM times 10's of thousands of members? yes, it takes up a lot of disk space (not bandwidth).
If it makes you feel better, I'm forced to abide by the limit, too. At times it's annoying, but it forces me to be concise.

I guess I am just spoiled by another message board I am part of, because I think PM size is unlimited: at least, it's really big. I've never had it tell me it was too long, and I joined that message board before this one so I guess I just feel like all should have huge PM capacity since my first experience was that way.
I think we used to have unlimited, too, but as the board got larger, I had to put certain restrictions on to keep the server from crying.
This site not only has a lot of traffic, but the traffic that's here is VERY active (ie posting a lot, lots of concurrent sessions, lots of searches at the same time, lots of pms at the same, time, etc...) It all adds up...
Last month, i had to restrict the Yahoo search engine spiders...they were KILLING the server, and making it hard for 'real' people using the board...
I understand the annoyance factor on the pm limits - it annoys me, too

I have been annoyed by it at times as well, but have grown to appreciate it. I have a tendency to go on and on, and when I have to go back and delete stuff to make it into the 1000 character limit, I find that my message is probably easier to understand. I ramble...a lot
