Default PMS side effect of Met?

I just started Metformin on Friday and I have noticed over the last couple of days that I have been extrememly irritable (like I have PMS really bad). Has anyone else had this effect? I also have the diarhea (sorry..) side effect and drowsiness (which I know are normal) .. Just wondering if it's just me. Thanks!

Hi,
I've been on Met for about a year now, and no PMS side effect. Actually I don't really have bad PMS while on Met. I think it is due to my hormones being straightenend out. But it's a different story when I'm not on Met and my hormones are all outta whack.
The stomach side effects will go away in a couple of weeks. Hang in there. Check out the Metformin board for suggestions on what to eat and not eat. The drowsiness is a side effect as well. I was so tired the first few weeks I was on it. But it went away. Be sure to take a B-Complex vitamin, since Met depletes the B-12 in your system. The B vitamins will give you more energy.
Good luck,

I feel I'm more "moody" in general since on met... I guess it would be "emotional"... I just thought It was me being more "normal"... I was oddly happy about it. I felt I like Iactually had female hormones running through me & being emotional made me feel more like a woman...

I remember crying alot the first couple weeks & feeling like a total "B" 25% of the time too!!

It will even out soon... Good luck!!

I take a prenatal (has 150% daily value of B12) but also take a B12 supplement (500mg). I heard that Met blocks the B12 and that's what causes the hair loss. I've had hair loss much worse since starting Met about 3 weeks ago, so I'm hoping the supplement will help.

Yea I believe Met caused my hair to thin drastically the whole year I've been on it. I'm a yo-yo when it comes to taking my vitamins. I'll remember to take them for a few weeks. Then I forget to take them for a few weeks.
I could kick myself, because I probally could have prevented alot of the hairloss if I would have remembered to take the B vitamins regulary.

I had severe pms for the first couple of months on met. This was my first cycle where I didn't have it. I read somewhere that this happens as your hormones are trying to level out.

Ive been taking Met for 5 months now. I wasnt losing my hair till I started taking it. But since I started taking it, its been unreal. Ive always had very thick hair, not anymore. Mine falls out all the time. Alot in the shower & when im brushing it but all during the day. I feel feel something on my neck or something & look down & there will be hair all over my shirt. I have to sweep the bathroom floor everyday because of so much hair coming out, and I swear if I had kept it all, I would have enough for a wig by now...lol
Ive always had PMS. Some months not as bad as others. Since I started taking met, my pms has been alot worse. Before I was on met & when I had a period, I would cramp maybe an hour before I started. And then the first day and a half of my period. But since taking met, I start cramping days before I actully starts. Sometimes I even get the lower back ache, and ive never had that before. My mood is some different but I have mood swings anyway, so I really cant tell whats pms and just the normal mood swings. Although I must say, that lately the mood swings havent been as bad or as often. Ive been praying about them & so has my poor understanding husband & they are alot better than before. Also ive never had tender breast before starting my period till I started taking met. My breast started getting tender this last sunday, the 21st and my period isnt due till the 30th. Soooooo I have seem many pms changes since I started taking met. But I will gladly deal with it as long as I have a period every month without having to take provera...lol Last month was my first month to start without taking provera to jumpstart me. And I actully started to the day of the month before, on the 30th. I was soooo happy. So im hoping that I do the same this month. Im praying that I dont have to take provera anymore.

I hear ya on the Provera. I hate that stuff.
I too cramp a few days before I start. I start thinking alright already, am I gonna start or not. Makes me thinks something is wrong. OMG the tender sore breasts. I don't know if you are supposed to be this sore each month. Being I'm not a "nomal" AF woman. But since being on Met, they are super sore.
I only had 1 day of PMS before AF this time. If I wasn't on Met I would PMS for days. Before, during, and after.

Yes, I've been on Met for about two months now, and I've experienced PMS a few days before my periods would start. At first I couldn't understand why I got so irritable over things that normally don't bug me - then I looked at the calendar and my pill pack! (I take BCP's too.)

Good luck in your treatment!
