A poem that touched me....Barely A Mother

I just wanted to post this poem. I have been feeling so incredibly anxious about Mother's Day coming up. I've been conflicted in my feelings, knowing that even though my baby isn't living, I'm still Bryce's mother and I will be the only mother Bryce will ever know. There are times when I doubt that I should be considered a mother on Mother's Day, but I gained some real clarity after reading this poem. It comes from the book Teardrop Diary by Erin McSparron. The book is amazing, it was like seeing my feelings written down on the page. My sister goes to the same church as the author and she got me this book when she learned that we were losing Bryce. She finally remembered to send it to me last week and it's been very emotional to read through but SO powerful! I really recommend it!

Barely A Mother
by Erin McSparron

If I ama Mother,
It seems I'm barely so.
For it was only weeks or months
That I held my baby close.

But God is helping me to understand,
He made me a Mother that day.
The day He gave me a precious life to hold,
And no one can take that away.

For Motherhood is a valuable gift,
Given by the Father above.
Conception is the only condition,
Not a living child to love.

God also gives another gift,
A gift of love so wild.
A Mother feels this gift most strong,
When she's seperated from her child.

So God knew that I would be sad
When He took my baby home,
But he promised to be by my side
And never leave me alone.

For grief is not a symptom given
To those who know no love.
It's not a sign of weakness,
But proof of God above.

So if you're told that Motherhood
Is reserved for Moms of the living.
Remember the honor that God gave you,
When He chose you for your baby's beginning.

This Is Beautifull, I Cried. I Remember My Sister, She Miscarried At 6mos And 2weeks And I Was There When She Gave Birth, But The Baby Was Still Alive, Is Just That She Was Too Small To Live, And I Held Chantel, (that's Her Name) After 5min She Whent To Jesus, It' S One Of My Hardest Moment In My Life, And I Was Only 15 Know I'm 26, But We (our Familly) Considered My Sister A Mother, B/c It Takes More Of A Loving Mother To Know That You Have To Let Go Of Something That You Longed For Do Long. So For Us She Was A Mother. And Know She Haves Another Little Girl, Nicole Shes 10yrs Already, But She Was Born @7mos, Mi Sis Haves Incompetent Cervix.
But You Are A Mother, And Since I'm Mexican, We Celebrate Mothers Day Today And I Whant To Tell You Happy Mothers Day, Or Feliz Dia De Las Madres. My Best Wishes To You =-)))

Girls, thanks for posting replies to the poem. I know I was kind of needing to post it for my own therapy, but it's definately something I felt I needed to share.

America, thank you so much for your reply. I'm so sorry to hear about your sister's loss.
The end of your post made me sob. You are the first person to tell me Happy Mother's Day and I was absolutely floored. Reading it in Spanish was so beautiful. Thank you so much for that. You honestly can't imagine how much that affected me and how grateful I am. Thank you.

We're definitely all moms here. Even if we only got to hold our babies for a few days, we're still moms. I'm glad you found a book that makes you feel better. A lot of the time, we feel a little crazy or unsure about the way we feel, but knowing other people feel the same way really helps. I'm glad she got it to you before Mother's Day.

lovepotato, thanks for your post hon. Reading this poem definatley helped to put my feelings into perspective and made me realize that I am definately Bryce's mother. I'm the only mother Bryce will ever have and will ever know. That makes me a very special kind of mom, just like you are such a special mom to Eric.
