Time is really less relevant...it has more to do with making sure you're on the right dosage and that your diet is controlled more than time. If you're on too low a dose, you could be on met indefinetly and have little results, so it's a matter of finding the right dose and lifestyle factors in place moreso than time.
I was on met for over a year with little change until I got committed to my diet and exercise and it was like a new drug. So I often tell people that if you're on a high enough dose (minimum of 1500 mg) and doing lifestyle consistently, that they should astill give it 6-12 months. Our hormones take a long time to get bungled and it takes a lot of time to get them righted..or at least it did for me.
