Default Poll on weight loss with Met

Okay, so this is my thing. I started on 1,000mg twice a day of Met on Sat. that was 6 days ago. I am dying here! I am bloated and stuffed all the time. I cannot even manage to eat 10 gams of carbs a day let alone more. I think yesterday I may have hit 20. So, my question is how much weight has everyone lost with Met and when will my belly feel better?? I know it is the meds, cause when I wake up and the pill had worn off, my stomach doesn't hurt. I need some inspiring stories ladies, I am getting discouraged. I want off this stuff but I know I can't. I am gonna cry! Send me good success stories! : ) Jamie

If you're started taking 2000 mg your first day out, no wonder you're bloated and sore. Poor Jamie! If you read the FAQ thread, there is a section on dosing and it talks about gradual dosing. Could you talk to your Dr about that? A lot of ladies start out taking 500 mg or less at first then gradually increase it as they can tolerate it to keep bloating and other side effects at bay. I started out at 1500 mg right off the bat and I suffered, so i can't imagine what you're going through. Wish my Dr had read about gradual dosing.

As you can read from my signature, I lost about 1/4 of my body weight (48 pounds) thanks to Met, a moderated IR Diet and exercise. The first yr I was on Met by itself, I lost about 13 pounds, but when I got the diet connection and started getting more regimented with my exercise, I lost an additional 25 pounds the second year. I had a nasty time with side effects until I got my carb level regulated at about 75-90 or so a day. It did get better for me over time.

All the side effects (and I was stubborn with my diet and paid for it dearly ) were WORTH the end result for me. I feel energetic and can think more clearly, I have normalized all but one of my cholestoral #'s, my free androgen, testosterone and fasting glucose, my periods are 30-34 days without fail.

I hope you start feeling better soon and will give the drug the chance to see if it can help you. Take care!

Talking Occifer....

You can just cut back the dose a little and work yourself up gradually....yikes, I can't believe he didn't tell you to work up to your full dose gradually...no wonder you're having problems! Well, met has been nothing short fo a miracle for me. With diet and exercise, I've lost over half of me, 160 pounds. I feel terrific on it! Your body has to get used to the medication and the new way you're eating...give it time. Like Christy, I eat about 75-90g a day of carbs, and that's where I stayed the entire weight loss, and it's where I stay now on maintenance.

Talking

Just wanted to let everyone know that I talked to my Doctor and he said he would like for me to try and stay on the 1,000mg twice a day if I could. So, it has been a week now, and I am sooo much better. I am still not eating alot of carbs at all, just don't feel like eating alot of times. But, my stomach does not distend and I do not feel like I am gloing to explode if pricked with a pin. How much weight should I lose with this stuff anyhow..I know it probably depends on the person, but I was just curious. : ) Thamks ladies for the help!!! Jamie

That's up to your body Jamie, and if you're willing to stick to the whole plan...met, exercise and diet. If you're devoted to being healthy, it can do great things for you.

So glad you're feeling better.

Jamie,
You are making HUGE changes right now, and I would imagine that your body will soon respond not only with weight loss but with improved insulin and hormone levels. You do need to give it some time, but many ladies here have proven that it can be done. I'm glad you're feeling better!
I myself dropped ten pounds when I went on metformin last fall without changing my diet. Once I really went low carb in April, the weight started falling off, around two pounds per week, and I ovulated after only seven weeks--probably the first time in many years.
This stuff really works for us, and I wish you the best of luck.
Sheri
