Default Polycystic ovary syndrome: Can I still get pregnant?

Polycystic ovary syndrome: Can I still get pregnant?

Q. Can a woman get pregnant if she has polycystic ovary syndrome?

A. Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most common hormonal imbalance among women of childbearing age. Women with PCOS who want to get pregnant usually need to take medications to cause the ovaries to release eggs (ovulation).

Most women who have PCOS never have a normal menstrual cycle. The ovaries develop cysts and don't release eggs. These cysts are fluid-filled sacs (follicles) that contain immature eggs.

Medications that may help trigger ovulation include:

Clomiphene citrate (Clomid, Serophene)
Gonadotropins, such as a combination of luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) or FSH alone (Fertinex, Follistim, Gonal-F)
With this type of treatment, more than 60 percent of women with PCOS are able to conceive. Without treatment, the chance of pregnancy is very low.

In addition, researchers are studying the use of metformin (Glucophage, Glucophage XR), an oral medication for type 2 diabetes, to treat PCOS. Metformin reduces the amount of glucose made and released by the liver. Doctors don't know the cause of PCOS. But research suggests a link to insulin metabolism. Several clinical trials have shown that metformin improves ovulation and decreases the male hormone androgen in women with PCOS.

During pregnancy, a woman with PCOS may be at greater risk of gestational diabetes and pregnancy-induced high blood pressure

Hello Trying...

The type of medication you may end up taking will be determined by your health goals (ie TTC or not-TTC), as well as, other factors.

The cost will be determined by your country and your health insurance...

THIS GUIDE (click here) , as well as, the links on THIS PAGE might help.

HTH.

Hello trying 2 b a mom-

I was diagnosed at 16yrs ago with PCOS at the age of 16. Literally 1/2 my life I've been dealling with PCOS. My husband and I are 11weeks pregnant now. This time around no climid was taken. I only took my metformin (glucaphage) the was it way written. I had also taken a fertili-aid vitamin. To our surprise its the first pregnancy and I'm 32 years old.

Metformin is the generic of glucaphage. It depends on your dose. It's not that expensive. But call around. Check mom and pop pharmacies as well as all the big ones. Some offer discounts to people with no insurance. Especially for this medication since it's actually a diabetic medication. Which helps if you don't have insurance. Now clomid I think runs aroun 45-50 dollars for each monthly cycle. Call for that as well. It's been a while since I bought meds in the states. I'm from Ohio, but now live in Austria. If you have any questions please feel free to e-mail me: oohfie@hotmail.com.

oohfie,
Congrats! I hope your pregnancy goes well! My husband and I are ttc with no results. I am on Metformin currently. If you don't mind me asking how regular are your periods? I get mine every 45 days so I am thinking that I am not ovulating...I did buy some ovulating kits and they say I ovulate but I am not sure with my periods being that far apart...So frustrated...
