Default Is it possible to be both hyperthyroid and hypothyroid ?

Can you be both hyper and hypo ? Is that even possible ?

My new doc did say that my previous tests are showing that I'm hypo, (I'm waiting for the new tests / results to come back)........and so I've been reading up on hypothryroid and while I do have some symptoms of being hypo, can't lose weight and sometimes cold hands and feet, I seem to also have alot of symptoms of hyperthyroid. Always feeling warm, hunger....etc

I feel like throwing a hissy fit right now because EVERY DAMN THING has to be so complicated in my life and it's driving me insane !

It's not really possible to be both at the same time. Some of the symtoms of hypo and hyper overlap. Whenever I am hypo (when I had to stop taking my Synthroid for my annual scan) I am always hungry...I eat almost nonstop. The lists you find on the internet are not all inclusive. You can have symptoms that are related to your hypo-ness that are not listed. Those are just the most common ones.

Since your thyroid controls so many functions in your body, it being out of whack can cause your body to be very confused and not know how to respond. I am betting that you are hypo with a few more symptoms than usual.

Thanks so much for your response.
You're right, sometimes certain things on the internet can be misleading and confusing at times, not all info is correct.
As soon as I get all my tests back I am going to have a clearer picture.
Thanks.

Paola, I thought I might add that hormone imbalances due to PCOS can cause symptoms that might be confused with fluctuations in thyroid function, and vice versa. It is very hard sometimes to pinpoint the origin of the symptoms you list, because they are common to both thyroid dysfunction and PCOS. This is why it is important to treat both conditions, if present. Best of luck to you!

I got my bloodwork back (disappointed though that there was no Free T3 because the doc had requested that so I don't know what the lab did with it !?).......anyway, here is my TSH: 3.08 ( 0.35 - 5.00 )
Free T4: 14 ( 9 - 23 )

I have ravenous hunger at times, espceially in the luteal phase and I am always hot, sweaty, and I don't have fatigue at all, so I'm not sure if that's HYPO or not.
So my doctor said that my TSH is still not low enough and that I am HYPO, but I'm scared to start Armour thyroid and then it screws me up in other ways.......I'm so lost.

But about a month or so ago my TSH was around 4.34, or something like that I can't remember exactly, so why is it now lower ?
I have lost some weight and improved some other values on my tests, cholesterol is a little lower too, so I don't know.

TSH .35 - 5? Isn't the normal range value for that .3 - 3 nowadays? Or is this lab just using different values?

Yes, you CAN be hyper AND hypo at the same time (well back and forth).

First of all yes, you should be grateful your doctor acknowledges that 3.08 is still a bit high. Most doctors let people flounder.

Secondly, armour is a natural pill with the make of if pig hormone. It is safe. At worst you'll feel hyper for a day and you can quit.

It's a misnomer that to be hypo you must feel this and this and this. MANY hypo people have what people would consider hyper symptoms. (Oprah thinks she went hyper but us thyroid patients think duh hashimoto's). You can feel anxious, sleepless, be thin, mind racing and all while being hypothyroid.

There is the autoimmune version of hypothyroidism called Hashimoto's hypothyroidism. With this your numbers will bounce around. What this does is your body is attacking your thyroid until eventually it kills it but in the meantime you get to go on a ride up bouncing numbers.

Along with all the hormone stuff you could be having adrenal/cortisol problems.

I have also been reading that PCOS causes feelings of hypoglycemia. I know that at times I KNOW I am not starving or I FEEL full but I still feel hungry at the same time. If I don't eat every 2 hours I get shakey and sick. I don't have these answers for myself right now.

So yes, your goal might be under 3.0 normally and under 2.0 if you are trying to have a child.

Also the "pig thyroid" is considered the "natural" form and it will show fast results and if you don't like it it will get out of your system fast. So please don't be afraid of it. Cut the pill in half and try a little. It won't hurt you and if you don't feel good on it quit.
