Exclamation Possible to have regular periods and pcos?

I am 5'2" and weigh 126 pounds. I have ALWAYS had regular periods (26 day cycles that last 4-5 days or so). You would think that I was not pcos because of having regular periods, but the only way that I know its pcos is because of the lh/fsh ratio for diagnosis. I have a little bit of acne and a few wild hairs on my chin. I also have a really hard time conceiving. Anybody else have very regular periods and still pcos?????? Very curious to know about anyone like me.

I used to have very regular periods too while having other PCOS symptoms... before I went on BCP. When I went off BCP they were irregular.

I was just recently told by my doctor that I have PCOS even thought I have regular periods. Mine are generally 28 day cycles with about five days on my period. I'm 5'7", 150 pounds. I'm physically active, I've never missed a period and the only way they dignosed me was the same as you, through the Lh/FSH levels, the fact that my estrogen, progesterone and testosterone levels are completely jacked, and that my sister was diagnosed with it a few years ago. I have a few stray hairs and in general, my acne never goes away. Other than that, I've never thought that there was anything wrong with me except for having a hard time getting pregnant. We've tried fo four years now.

Keep in mind, that 'regular' periods, don't always mean 'normal, ovulatory' periods.

So yes, you can have pcos while having 'regular' periods:

Diagnosing PCOS in women who menstruate regularly

You can also have periods without ovulating...

Can you have a period without ovulating?

Hi I am a newly diagnosed pcos thin cyster. My cycles are 33-35 days long. I seem to ovulate each month but produce 35-40 follicles on each ovary resulting in really slow development of leading follicles (and possibly poor quality as a result). I have been ttc for 2 years. Was on bcps for over 10 years and never knew I had a problem - and had seriously irregular periods for a whole year after stopping bcps. First RE refused to diagnose or even run bw for PCOS bc I am not overweight or hairy. My new RE tested me and I have slightly elevated testosterone. I also suffer from acne that drastically improves with low carb diet - so have always felt it is insulin related. I have been on metformin for a month and I have already seen reduction in acne and what seems like more steady BBT. Hope this helps!

Yasmin8, OMG, I was just wondering the same thing! Thanks for posting!
I'm the same as you...26 to 28 day cycles about 4 or 5 days long. No real pcos symptoms except really bad cystic acne and trouble ttc. My ovaries are barely considered poly cystic. But I'm pretty sure Kat's post is correct and I don't ovulate.
I've been seeing an RE for about 9 months...ovulate like a champ with drugs, but still no luck. Just started Met, had a lap surgery, so we're finally back in business!

Thanks for the post, we're not alone!

I also have ovulated on fertility drugs--clomid, femara and gonal F, but nothing never pregant with their help. I am now just trying to use exercise, especially weight training to ovulate and for health reasons (ldl cholesterol is a bit high).

I got a reagular heavy period every month since I was 13. At age 24 I was diagnosed with PCOS and put on Yasmin. I just stopped taking PCP last week and am very curious to see if I still get a regular period.

Anyway one thing is certin about all of this PCOS mess. A healthy diet never hurts no matter what our scenatio thin/fat/period/no period ect...

There seems to be such a wide spectrum of PCOS--it's mind-boggling! I am 5'6", 135 pounds with cycles of 35 days. I've been charting for a while, had blood tests, etc, and all of those cycles have been ovulatory. I've struggled with acne for what seems like my entire life (I'm 29), and my LH/FSH levels and testosterone levels are all out of whack. We have only been ttc since June '09, but I've always suspected that I have PCOS, so I went to get it checked out. I've been doing a lot of research, and it seems likely that I have poor egg quality even though I do ovulate. Has anybody out there been in this situation and done something that worked? I exercise and eat a low GI diet as a rule (sooooo helpful for my acne!!!), so I don't think that insulin resistance would be a problem for me. I'd love to hear what has worked for others to get "better" eggs!

I am newly dx w/ PCOS due to cystic ovaries, mild acne, and have a regular 28 day cycle period that lasts 4-5 days consistenly since I was 15 yo. I was wondering this same thing... everyone seems to have irregular periods w/ PCOS except me, it's good to know there are others out there! I'm guessing I probably don't ovulate so hopefully after blood work, some meds will help me with that. My other symptoms include mild acne just recently in past year (I'm 24 now), I never had acne in my life before now! Also we have been ttc for past year with no luck so I figured it was time to head to GYN for some answers. I am getting blood work done Friday as well as a fasting glucose/insulin test because they believe I may have insulin issues... so we'll see!!!

I got diagnosed around your age too. I am now 32. I am truly hoping pregnancy won't be difficult for me becuase i get my periods but your story doesn't help me think that. The good thing is you can get it under control. At your age I got on Yasmin BCP and it worked wonders - all symptoms went away but the getting pregnant part doesn't work with that.

Maybe people like you and me have more of an adrenal source for the adrogens rather than ovarian. I have high DHEA and am also a healthy weight, cysts and no detectable insulin resistance.

Good luck with your blood work it can help you understand where your problems start and hopefully that will help with pregnancy.

of interest: Lack of consensus on what defines PCOS and "normal" insulin sensitivity

This helps me too! My period comes every month, it's just been slightly irregular lately. I'm 29, 5' 10", 147lbs. I actually had no abnormalities in my bloodwork but was told that it can vary from month to month. I've been on Metformin for 2 months now. My symptoms have been horrible lately though, lots of pain and burning. I'm pretty sure I ovulate too, my eggs just aren't good. Been ttc for over a year now. I've also suffered with acne ever since I was a teenager. The Metformin seems to be helping that though so far!

Jenneral--may I ask what the basis of your diagnosis was if you had normal bloodwork? Have you noticed that the metformin has done anything to change your cycles? I'm starting metformin tomorrow! What dosage are you on?

Ovulatory cycles of about 35 days; doc thinks follicular phase is too weak which makes eggs no good!
On cycle 3 of metformin (up to 1500 mg). Pleeeease let this be it!
