I am currently seeing Dr Mules on Auckland's North shore. He happily prescribed me metformin and is also my LMC for my current pregnancy. He has a very nice bedside manner and has been sooo helpful so far

Kia ora tatou,

I'm a newbie here, but not to PCOS! I have been stupidly living the life of an ostrich for the past too many years just hoping I could live with it and/or it would go away!

So I'm here to learn

Anyway I was diagnosed in 1993 by a female doctor at the Lincoln Medical Centre (nr Christchurch). She was excellent and sent me off for a scan straight away. I can't remember her name, I'm sorry that's unhelpful! I should be able to find out though and will post at a later date in case it helps someone.

Since living in Christchurch I have been to the UK and back. In the UK I tried to get some help and the local GP was so appallingly off-hand and I wasn't very assertive so I didn't persist.

Getting back to NZ this year I thought since I have more faith in our doctors, I'd give it another go! As a result I have been to see Dr Penny Rowley at Khandallah Medical Centre in Khandallah, Wellington. She is easy to talk to and is a positive sort of a person who listens. She seems to know something about PCOS which is also a great start! =)

She has prescribed Yasmin and Spironolactone. Also Metformin, but she wants me to have a blood test before taking that one and I am trying very hard to build up the courage to go - it is one of my major fears (really unhelpful!!).

Blimmin heck though the Yasmin x2 + Spironolactone + Flixotide + Ventolin X2 all came to $143!!!

Sorry for the long post but as it's my first I thought I should introduce myself a bit first.

When I was in Hamilton Dr Bula from the Fairfield Medical clinic was really good about PCOS and is really willing to work with you. He also has been on a few training/information seminars about it too.

Right now I am stuck with the uni Dr's. They are ok, but nothing to write home about. They were very confused as to WHY I wanted to go off the BCP and it took me almost an hour to get it through their thick skulls that I wanted to sort this thing out naturally.

*sighs*

Doctors eh?

I saw firstly Dr Vasu Iyengar who wanted me on clomid early but i persisted with being natural to no avail so i went onto clomid.
Then for the 2nd TTC timeframe i saw Dr John Hutton who put me on clomid again. He is so lovely and funny

My GP Dr Des Wong at Manukau City Medical Centre is awesome - he diagnosed me first time I saw him with my symptoms and sent me for bloods/scans to confirm. Used to see Dr Anna Fenton when was first diagnosed, but she moved to Christchurch so now see Dr Stella Milsom at Fertility Associates. She's fantastic! Very straight up and knowledgeable.

Hi,

Can anyone recommend a good acupuncturist in central or East Auckland for fertility issues?

I just found this website for Liz Thearle, not sure how good she is personally, but there is lots of great information on that website. She's based in Christchurch.

I see Dr Paula Weadon at the moment. She's at the Ponsonby Medical Centre. She did diagnose me straight away (sent me to have an ultrasound and blood tests) but has not prescribed anything. I do feel a little bit that I need to push to get things from her. So I asked to be tested for diabetes and I am currently waiting to get my fasting glucose results. If it turns out I am IR I'll ask for metformin.

I have also found a clinic called Patient's Advocates in Tauranga. They test testosterone and progesterone levels and do over-the-phone consultations. They prescribe natural progesterone and I am keen to try that. Has anyone tried it?

Although I am thin I am currently (for the last 2 weeks) on low GI, low sugar, low carbs diet. I have noticed that I've lost my belly (all the weight I do gain tends to gather around my belly) and I am pretty sure I ovulated last month, although this was the first time I paid attention as I do get my period regularly.

I am also keen to know whether I would need a GP referral to see an endocrinologist or whether I can refer myself. These things are quite costly. Luckily I do have insurance which covers most of it.

If you're going through the public health system you'll want a refferal from your GP. I imagine its loads quicker with the insurance though - I'd give them a call just incase there is a particular endo or clinic they'd want you to go to in order to get covered, and then contact a clinic and go from there.

I was just looking at this thread and wondered if it would be easier if I edited the first post (or something) and listed all the recommendataions on that first page - perhaps in order from North to South? Would that make it easier for everyone? (I'd do the same with the Australia one, although I may get stuck on geography but I guess I can google lol)
