THank you Thank you Thank you for this board. I have been taking Met. for 4 months now and cant stay out of the bathroom uggggggggggg and anti diarra meds are my friend. I will try some of this stuff tomorrow when I can go to the store.
I have a question... ? Ive just upped my dose from 1000mg per day to 2000mg per day. The 2 tablets i take in the morning make me feel really really sick, invariably resulting in me being sick on the way to Uni. Should i try to space the out and maybe take one at lunch time instead of both in the morning? Or should i soldier on with it? lol.
Thanks x

I'd space it out if it were me... Either at lunch or add one to bedtime. And snack on crackers! That helps me. :-)

I just started back on Met XR on 10/31/08 at 500mg today i increased to 1000mg and man am i feeling the problems so i am very thankful to everyone who has posted so i can try some of these remedies. This is my 2nd atempt at taking Met and the first time I didn't have these tips so i hope they work b/c i want a baby so bad.
hey,
what are some of the remedies that you've found? I have to go back on met and I really want to avoid the constant bathroom runs
I was on Metformin for almost over a year and It was horrid...I was always running the restroom and I could go no where without worry about it! It was just horrible, and for the last 2 months I've been off of it, its back to my regular self. My doctor told me that I may have to go back on it and now I'm trying to figure out what to do.
i am telling you... take immodium it works great... since i have been back on it i take that when i feel the gassy pains coming on and i never feel anymore after i take one immodium. i do try to stay away from sugars and green foods

This post is awesome. I just started taking met a few days ago and was really nervous about it. After reading through all of these tips for a couple days I made sure to follow them when taking it and haven't had any problems aside from some gas.
Immodium has not been my friend in the past so I that is the one thing I haven't tried. I may though if needed when I up my dose though. I think I will wait until after Thanksgiving for that.
I drink it with milk or eat yogurt when I take it. I am doing a low GI diet for the most part though carbs have only bothered me on it once or twice and it was right after I took it. Salad hasn't bugged me either. The met really has made me quit craving sugar all day everyday so that's helped.
I have been making sure to eat every few hours, lots of foods with fiber in them and drink a ton of water. I am taking half a 1000 mg pill in the morning and then the other half usually around 3 or 6 hours later (I read somewhere that it stays active or something for 6 hours so I figured that's a good time to try it.)
I am going to work my way up to 2000mg a day but I haven't decided it I am going to still take the halves during the day and take a full pill before bed or if I am going to take a full pill twice a day at the same times I have been doing it.

2000mg, seems to be such a high does, is there a reason for going so high. I've read all over these post that people change there doses. Is this something the doctors are asking to help with pcos or the baby?
I really like your idea about breaking the pills to make them stay active, I will try that as well If my doctor asks me to try it after my blood work.
I dunno, I was just prescribed the 2000mg daily. My doctor said to start with half pills to see how I do and then work my way up to the full dose over a few weeks. He seemed pretty knowledgeable about PCOS so I listened. I have a follow up in 3 months so I guess we will adjust from there based on how things are going. It is only to get the PCOS under control for now. We aren't TTC yet but I want to in about a year.

I have been taking Met for about 4 years and I have found that my GI symtoms change depending on what I eat. After talking to the PA she said the most important thing is to take the pills in the morning with food, something with fat it in. Usually peanut butter on toast or cereal with 2% milk. I stopped buying skim milk for this reason. Also I notice the bathroom frequencies increase when I fall off the wagon and eat bad foods, such as sugar - chocolate (which is my worse enemy). When I started Met I was weighing 323 and on 2000mg, after sometime I have dropped below 300 lbs and I felt so sick on the 2000mg that my doctor moved me down to 1500mg which I have been on daily for 3 years so so. I am now at 275 and trying to get back into a good workout program. I find walking and lifting weights, drinking plenty of water and having a balanced diet seems to keep me regular even on the Met. I just need to work on committing to a routine.
I have also just started with some low glycemic protein shakes to see if that helps with weight loss. The other advice I got was to adjust my diet to a diabetic diet. Even though PCOS is not diabeties, the symptopms are so similar and often leads to Type 2. But any shifts in diet should be monitored by physician. I am closely monitored for my liver function since I increased my protein. Don't want to cause more damage.
Good luck to all during the hardest time for us!! Christmas cookie days!. Stay strong and remember you can have one, just not the whole tray!!
I would just like to thank all the contributors for this post. I am going to start my Met this PM and wanted to know what to look for and how to help it. Hopefully I'll have something to add as I have my experience too lol.
