My brother is a type 1 diabetic, and I checked my glucose when I was feeling dizzy/nauseous after taking met. My glucose was 93 (in the normal range), so I"m not sure if it has a direct correlation to blood glucose or not.

Default Metformin Side Effects

Hello everyone -
I started Met on last Tuesday, only taking my 500mg pill every other day. The side effects are alot more bearable this time around, but I'm still feeling lightheaded/dizzy. I'm really tired and of course having the gastro issues. The gastro issues are bearable and I heard they get better with time. I'm going to stick to the 500mg dose every other day for another week and then go to 500mg every day for two weeks, then up it by 250mg each week (cutting the 500mg tablet in half) until I reach my desired dose of 1500mg. I'm hoping this might make me tolerate the Met better. I seem to be really sensative to Met. I also read that vitamin B12 can help with the side-effects, so I took a sublingual supplement today. I'm keeping track of my symptoms so I can try to find some sort of correlation for the horrible side-effects. God Bless you all. We will bet the Metformin yet. I did ask my doctor about the extended release. She brought up a good point. Taking the ER version would let the medicine stay in my system all day, so would the effects be better if the medication is given all at once. Whats the science behind the ER versus the regular version.

Default My Met story

Hi I just started Met 4 days ago and thanks to this thread I have had minimal side effects. My biggest se has been extreme tiredness and bad flatulence. It works on me like a sleeping pill. I have also found that if I eat anything with over about 10g of sugar in it that I am on the toilet in about a half hour with awful cramps and diarrhea. I work as an RN in the operating room and cannot leave to go to the bathroom. So I have found if I eat low GI diet and consistantly eat every 4 hours or so even if its just a banana or something small that I am fine. Met has actually made me more hungary but I'll take that over nausea. I take my met halfway through my meal and no stomach upset. I have read a lot about eggs bothering people and wanted to say that the blenders egg whites have been fine with me and are a good alternative to the real thing. Oh and one last tip if you are going somewhere and worried about the bathroom issue, just keep immodium in your purse it works awesome and quickly. I am upping my dose this weekend and am nervous but the support here has really helped.

I'm glad to hear you are having minimal side-effects. You are a nurse - that's awesome. I'm in school to become a nurse. I have found that when I eat sugary foods I feel really sick with horrible stomach cramps. I've also been taking vitamin B12. I've also read that chromium helps too. I'm thinking of buying an ovulation kit, hoping that the Met has made my cycle more regular. I'm only taking the Met every other day for now but will start taking it every day next week. I'm doing much better this time around on Met thanks to my friends here and all your great advice. Let's make sure we keep each other abreast about anything that seems to work for you while on Met. Together we can beat Met!!

Default Hmmm

I've also noticed that when I take my Met at night with dinner, I don't feel sick until I wake up the next morning. No matter how early I eat dinner, I'm never sick the same night even when staying up until 1 or 2 in the morning. I'm only sick when I wake up the next morning....go figure. I can deal with the gastro-problems, but this dizziness and sleepiness is driving me crazy. I'm in school for nursing and I'm having trouble studying, because I'm so sleepy!!!!!! Do any of you have High Blood Pressure? I took myself off of my HBP meds - just hydrochlorizde - until I see my internist on Monday. I've read that you can't take hydrochlorothriade along with Met. Any suggestions?

Question

Hey cysters,

Just started on Met 3 days ago. Have to confess first day had horrible burning cramps, but now its bearable. I'm on 500mg each day for a week then 1000mg each day next week and then 1500mg each day 3rd week. After reading the success stories I'm pretty siked about it! I have had problems with flatuence which isn't good (I work in a small office, where we all share one bathroom ;0) But what I was wondering is for those that have had prior success with Met what diet did you follow while on it or were you even following one. I'm confused, I was on the Adkins where I lost 25 lbs, then all weight lost just stopped! So frusterating, so my doc put me one Met. After reading up on diet while on Met I'm hearing Adkins but then I'm also hearing low-carb but with whole grains, beans, etc. What are you guys doing?

Thumbs up Go Team Fortament Xr !!

Hi guys -
I've been off circuit for a while. My mother-in-law and a friend were visiting at the same time - UGH - LOL. Anyway, I have great news!!! I went to my doctor and she gave me Fortament XR 1000mg. As most of you know from my prior posts, I had a difficult time tolerating just 250mg of Glucophage. Well, I can honestly say that the only side effect I've had while on the Fortament is diahrrehea and stomach pain. With Glucophage, I was dizzy, couldn't focus, nauseated, and had headaches. My doctor gave me a month's supply. When I went to Kaiser, they had diffuculty finding it. Since my doctor had already given me a month's worth of samples, I decided to forgo the headache and just call Kaiser's customer service department next week to find out the deal. I may have to pay for it out of pocket. Maybe getting my doctor to write a letter to Kaiser explaining to them that I couldn't tolerate the Glucophage might help. I've already lost 6lbs, although I'm not sure if it's because I've cut back on food and taking the meds or just mere excitement of finally being closer to my goal of having another baby - LOL. I have noticed, that if I eat anything sweet (I ate jello/fruit cup) I get really bad stomach cramps and have to go the bathroom. I need to experiment with eating starches (potatoes, rice, etc) since they turn into sugars to see if I get the same effect. I'm trying to cut down on all the unnecessary carbs (rice, pasta, etc.). If anyone can't tolerate Glucophage, I really do suggest taking the Fortament instead. It has done wonders. I've also noticed my face clearing of my post-teenage acne. Maybe that's in my head too - LOL!!

I'm cutting down, not out the carbs and exercising. Lifting weight, walking, any kind of exercise will help. I've also started drinking alot more water. I cut out canned veggies and only do frozen or fresh. No canned fruit, only fresh. I've also started taking acidolphils pills and chromium pills which help with sugar levels.

Default Thinking about Metformin

I am thinking about taking Metformin for the first time. I have my gynecologist appt. in a few weeks and wondering what types of questions I should ask. Diagnosed 3/08, in which they told me very little about. Very overwhelmed and confused with so much information. Have not had a period since 5/08. Any suggestions on specific questions I should ask??

Default Questions to ask GYN

No period since May '08. If you are trying to concieve I would suggest (if you insurance allows) going to see a reproductive gynecologist. My insurance (Kaiser) makes you start with the gyn first and if there isn't any luck there then the gyn can refer you to a repro gyn. If not, when you visit your gyn, make sure you tell them that you haven't had a period since May '08. I'm sure she will do blood work and possibly order an ultrasound to rule out anything. Make sure you tell your GYN you have PCOS. She may not give you the Met until after your labs come back. Do you have any history of Thyroid disease? If your thyroid hormones are off, that can cause miss a period. I would also start watching what you ate and start to exercise - if you are overweight. I use to think that only overweight people suffered from PCOS, but I'm finding that to be untrue. Please feel free to email me directly if you wish. I just had my first visit with my gyn in late march. She immediatley gave me Met because I had my labwork from my internist with me. I haven't had a period Feb. 09. I couldn't tolerate the Met, so after a week, I stopped. I waited two weeks to see my internist (I already had an appt. with her because I ran out of blood pressure meds) I told her about the Met and how it made me so sick. She told me that most folks have horrible side effects and didn't understand why docs just don't prescribe Fortament XR off the back. I'm now taking 1000mg of Fortament whereas before I couldn't even tolerate 250mg of Glucophage. BTW - make sure you keep a copy of all of your labs. I guess by working in the medical field I've always tried to be as much of a help to the docs as possible.

The gyno I'm seeing now already knows about the PCOS. Which I may switch b/c I've been seeing the same Dr. and have had this problem ever since I started my period. In which they never could explain why I never had regular cycles. They only did blood work b/c I did my own research and asked them to test me. BTW, they ARE fertility specialists, so I think I should have been tested long ago. But that's besides the point. My periods have always been irregular since I can remember. I'm lucky to have atleast 2 menses a year. Had lab work done in March 08', but since I was unfamiliar with everything...I never asked what was tested. Which I most def. will next week. I'm not over weight (23yrs, 5'5, 130lbs)...which surprises me, but I have gained about 10 pounds within the last year. No history of Thyroid disease as well. My fiancee and I are not "actively" TTC, but not preventing either. We have the state of mind if it happens, it happens. This is why I do not want BCP. Which I was on last year, and the month I stopped is the last period I've had. I have acne, and excessive hair, which I've heard the Met can help. Any advice would be greatly appeciated!!!

With the new meds she put you on...is that suppose to help ovulation as well? I know met isn't a guarantee, but it sure would be nice to have a period w/o BCP. And do offices usually charge for copies of lab tests?

I should be hearing from my dr. today about blood work I had done a week ago, I'm thinking he is going to put me on Gluc or Met. I was on it before for about 60 days several years ago and I quit taking it b/c the side effects were so awful. Now I'm more serious about ttc so I'm going to do whatever he suggests. Thank you for everyone's suggestions, I'm really nervous about the side effects especially since my husband leaves town tomorrow for a few weeks and I'll be doing this alone!

I took met for 3 months and finally had to stop taking it, the nausea was more than I could stand.

Aside from that, I only had "upset" stomach for the first few days - once I modified my meal times and avoided fatty and greasy foods I noticed a HUGE difference.
