I've been on Met for 4 weeks, and on my full dose (1500 mg) for 2.
My biggest tip for taking Met is start small, and increase slooowwwwlly. Listen to your body. If your current dosage is making you ill, cut back a bit. Don't increase your dose until you have next to no side effects on the one you are on. Don't be in such a hurry to get to your full dose that you make your miserable--- if you are feeling really bad, you are likely to stop the Met altogether, and you cannot reap its benefits that way. Take your time, and good luck!!

I'm on day 3 of taking Met (500mg/day). Next week I'll be doubling my daily dosage to 1000mg/day. So far no symptoms that I can identify. I have been on it before several years ago and had severe nausea and vomitting. This time, nothing so far. Well, I've been exhausted - is that a side effect? And I've been peeing more often. Does it normally take a few days for it to affect you or should the side effects have started by now if I was going to have them?
Thanks ladies! I'm so new to this and I'm hoping that the meds won't affect me like I've heard they might.

I just got my Metformin today & haven't started taking it yet. For now my Dr put me on 500mg until we see how that works. Thank you for listing all these helps, I'll know what to try if I get the bad side-effects.
I've heard that Imodium and Met together really help with the "Met Poops". If I take my Met at night, should I take my Imodium then, or first thing in the morning?

Hi ladies! Has anyone experienced really light to non-existent periods while on Met? All of my other symptoms have pretty much disappeared besides the occasional migraine during that time of the month, but the period is barely there. I have also gained weight since starting 3 months ago, but that could be my fault and not the meds. Just wondering if anyone else has the same issues?
Hey everyone.. im new on here, i just got diagnosed with PCOS last month, and started my first Metformin today. (the white pills) i heard they s/e of those arent quite as bad. Havent had any s/e yet.. I have class every morning from 8am-2pm.. so im really hoping i dont have any bathroom issues! We will have to wait and see.
Don't know if this has been mentioned before (haven't had time to read all 37 pages!) but I have been on 2000mg of the extended-release tablet for quite some time. Everyone kept telling me how much better the side effects were on the XR, and I just wasn't feeling it. However, I started taking half the dose with breakfast and the other half with dinner(as opposed to all at once with breakfast) and it helped so much with the side effects....now I only get in trouble with too many carbs.
It's taken dang near a week, but I read every post in this thread. It's all very very interesting and helpful. I started with 1000 mg of met on Wednesday, 500 with breakfast, 500 with dinner. After my first dose, I had to make a couple of bathroom trips. I'm attributing that to eggs now. Read about the eggs being a bad idea after that.. LOL
The main thing I have experiences is extreme fatigue. I think I just need to get a b-complex vitamin.
I'm hoping I continue to do well as I have a 6 hour car ride this afternoon. My mom and I are heading to a graduation. We've packed low carb stuff and I'm taking the activia yogurt smoothies with to have with my pill and breakfast in the mornings while we're out of town.
I've been sandwiching my pill since I started. And drinking plenty of water. I'm scared to go near too many carbs too.. LOL
I don't have a problem with greasy or sugary stuff but pasta gives me the worst gas (sorry tmi) while on met! I guess that's good cause I shouldn't be eating it anyway!
I started Metformin 1000mg a day on May 8th. The first week, my stomach was a little uneasy and had a few episodes with having to run to the bathroom. This week had been a lot better!! I'm actually getting VERY excited because May 14th...only 6 days after being on Met I started my FIRST period that I have had in over a year!! There is hope
Don't take too much imodium... you can wind up constipating yourself. Are you having the "met poops"? If not, don't take anything until you have too.
Thankfully I never had any issues on Met other than the nausea....

I am a newbie, so I am still getting familiar with the boards. I came across this thread and wanted to share one of the side effects that I struggle with from Metformin. I noticed a lot of people saying that they feel tired, I always do too. I have been taking either Metformin or Gloucaphage since Sept. 2007. Currently I am on Metformin, and have been for the past 8 months. I now have a vitamin B deficiency. My endo. said that Metformin sometimes causes this problem. I take a prescribed tablet: Metanx. It has helped with some of the tiredness. I still have nausea on and off from the Metformin.
Good Luck to everyone!!

Thanks for all the great information. I haven't read all of it yet...but plan to. I was just diagnosed and put on 1000mg Met (regular Met 500mg 2xday) just yesterday. So far I haven't had many s/e. But I figure the worst is yet to come! haha Thanks to everyone for sharing!
