I wish I had read this thread sooner. I've been on Metformin for over a year, switched to Glumetza in March because of the Metformin side effects, and now I'm getting the side effects even with Glumetza. I'm fine at 1000mg of Glumetza at night, but as soon as I try to add in another 500mg or two, I get very sick during the day and have to leave work (I don't have enough time off for that).

I've got some ideas for things to try now at least. It's discouraging when it doesn't help at all, because you feel like you're throwing away money on prescriptions and doctor visits.

I've been on Met before but had such bad effects I just felt miserable. My dr switched me to the XR so with these tips i'm feeling optimistic! Wish me luck!

I would avoid these foods as I learned the hard way while taking Metformin:

1. No chocolate milkshakes (which sucks for me)
2. No fast food
3. No Chinese

That's pretty much all for now. Will post more as I come on them. I know that taking it at night really helps and at the same time everyday. I've noticed more energy on it so far..hoping for ovulation stimulation...

This really helped me a lot... I've been taking metformin for 2 years now and i'm going to use this advice. my biggest problem is testosterone levels and difficulty to lose weight though everything is better than it was before i was diagnosed, do you have any suggestions?

Hi Ladies...

I love choco milkshakes..and I got a strawberry one from wendys/mcd's yesterday. and i am feeling awful today! lots of...things, happening..lol. The funny thing is that for awhile a while, when i first started up taking 1000mg/day, i was doing ok..and now, i am having problems..again!! My periods are great though..only 3 days this last cycle..if they are even real periods..but I am getting cramps (not alot, but some), so i hope they are I really want to have a baby..and we can't afford IVF (no fert. clin where i live anyway), so this is the only way to go!! When I logged on to this thread just now, i came across the first post..and the lady was saying something about taking two big spoonfuls of plain yogurt a day..so i may try it..it can't hurt, right??

right!! Eggs seemed to agitate me also...while on metformin..but not for sure. The symptoms usually get better within a week-3wks. So just hang in there!!! You can do it. I have problems with Testosterone also. I recently started charting my Basal Body Temperature..so Hopefully.....

Default Metformin

I first started taking metformin 2000mg/day about a year ago. After about 6 months of some rather unpleasant side effects (such has having to use the restroom about 5-10 mintues after eating anything), i talked with my doctor and they placed me on foratmet 1000mg/day. needless to say, i still have some of the side effects, but not nearly as much

I first started taking metformin 1500 mg 2 months ago and at first I was taking them twice a day during the day and I would have to go to the restroom about 1 minute after eating anything and I had severe cramps. I started taking both of them right before I go to bed and that has seemed to help a lot.

I just started on Met. yesterday... I made the mistake of taking it on an empty stomache with grapefruit juice (that has been working with my other meds), I was running to the bathroom nearly all day. I read some of the posts on this forum and tried it differently today. I made some hearty oatmeal, with bran and walnuts and took the pills halfway through my meal. This seems to have worked. No running today.
Thanks for the advice. I'll post more as I learn or have questions.

Unhappy

Hey everyone
I recently was on 500 metformin but my cycles stopped so the dr. decided to increase me to 1000. It seems since i've been taking metformin i get all the symptoms like im about to start and never do. Its been about 4 months now. Another thing i've noticed are my breasts are REALLY sore and sensitive. Anyone had these problems? ( going to see an endocrinologist FINALLY next week)

I've only been on met (500mg 2xdaily) for about three weeks, and my best advice would be to stock up on Ozium. It's the best air freshener I've used, and in a house as small as mine, it would be criminal not to.

I used to take met, but had to stop because I was one of the few that had severe side-effects from it. I hope to continue therapy sometime in the future, but for now, I'm not on anything (costs are too high and insurance is gone).

Anyway, I always got rid of that metal taste with a sip or two of ginger ale. If not, I would chew on a cinnamon piece of gum until the met flavour was gone, then spit the gum out so not to re-introduce the bits of met back to my tongue.
