My OBGyN is sure I have PCOS, but won't formally diagnose me with it. He started me on Met Friday night and I have done fine until Sunday night. I didn't sleep because I was either on the toliet or the pain in my tummy was so intense it made my toes curl. I am school teacher and I am missing the 4th day of school. How do other teachers deal with this? The small meals and side effects and still teach?

I just started Met last night and this thread is very helpful. Thank you for all the information, I'm going to try to pick up ginger and drink lots of tea!

okay so I feel kinda odd, I've only been on metformin for 3 days but the only bad bowel side effect I had was the first night. I've had insomnia the past 2 nights though, dont know which i would prefer at this point.

Shadow - I had insomnia the first few nights as well but it went away after about 4 days...I took some naps during the day to counteract. Stick with it!

so after a week on 500mg at supper time, i'm feeling pretty good. just have to remember to be patient and that things aren't going to happen overnight. I've lost 2 pounds this past week. Although i'm not sure if thats because of the met or because i've continued to decrease my carb intake and up my protein all the while not eating more that 1600 cals a day. oh and exercise. The insomnia has gone away thank goodness. thank you EmOgle for letting me know i wasnt alone with that side effect. I'm now 30 pounds away from my "goal" weight that i wan't to reach before going off of b.c., I'm hoping to get there by december, that would be great. I'm a little afraid to go off of the b.c not knowing if the met is going to help me with my cycle. the last time i went of the b.c there was no A.F for 3 months then when A.F did show up it lasted 53 days, painfully long days. I have noticed my skin is already clearing up and the hair growth on my chin seems to have slowed down. WOOHOO.

My first day on 1500mg of metformin was 2 days ago. The first day was fine the second was hell (dizzy, nauseous, sleepy). Wish I had stopped by here first as I didn't know how helpful easing into 1500mg could be. Thanks for all the tips.

Do you guys monitor your blood sugar while taking metformin? I am not (yet) a diabetic so I wasn't planning on doing this but the pharmacist I talked to today thought it might be a good idea...

I started 500mg of Met today, and i'm increasing it by 500 every week until i reach 2000.

I have read everyone's tips on how to avoid GI issues, but i feel like i'm stuck in a no win situation - my dr has me on such a strict diet, that i dont know how to manage eating enough, and enough of the right stuff, to counteract the met.

for example - no processed carbs at all - even whole wheat- no dairy, no sugar or sugar substitutes. so i can't eat cereal, anythign with bread, pasta, etc. For now i have been cheating and eating eggs alone for breakfast and small salads for lunch. there is really nothing else i can eat. Pretty much a protein and veggie diet. even some fruits off limits.

so i guess my question is, what should i be eating to counteract the met s/e? i see people eating ceral, yogurt, whole wheat, etc - basically all the stuff i can't eat.

sorry to vent - just feel stuck right now!

dang I thought my diet was strict. why is eating eggs cheating? they are high in protein and no carbs, maybe you should talk to your doc about what you'd be able to eat that could help because you are so restricted right now. until then i'd just eat lots and lots of lettuce. its seems to help me sometimes.

Just to give a little information. I take 2000mg a day. I can tell you that if I eat eggs within 2 hours it's not good. I get cramps and have to head for a bathroom or it's gives me a really bad stomache. Also, I notice that when I eat salads I get cramps about 2 hours later and have to go to the bathroom but then I'm fine. It's not like if I don't go now I'm in trouble but it's the only way to get rid of the cramps.

New to PCOS, Met and this forum. I am on 500mg of met and started yesterday. I know that everyone is different, but I love salads with spinch, not the iceburg or romaine lettuce. I am a bit scared to have a salad as I on the road lot during th day, and don't want to have to stop at a restaurant. Any bad experiences with spinach salad??

Well, after the first week on Metformin, I have no more side effects unless I accidently eat something that contains white flour. I have lost almost 20 pounds ()! The bad part is I have been on 750mg ER for a month and my doctor said I did not ovulate.

I was wondering if anyone has ovulated on 750mg or less???? I don't really wanna up my dose and I don't think my doc will because his suggestion was to just add Clomid. I told him I wanted to stick to just Metformin for a while and see what my body does.

maybe I misread this, but you lost 20 lbs in one week?! That doesn't seem healthy at all!

I have been on Met for one month ... the side effects go away after about 3 weeks of taking the Met, but you have to take it relgiously at the same times each day. Your symptoms will be a bit extreme depending on how high of dose you are on. I take the extended release (XR) 750mg twice per day... so 1500mg per day. The best thing to do is carry with you some immodium and watch out for the trigger foods. Basically don't eat much yogurt or smoothies... or basically anything that has much lactic acid... because basically Met makes you like super lactose intolerant. I could drink milk however.. but yogurt or ice-cream? OMG, it was like fighting with fire! No alcoholic beverages either.. especially something like a pina colada or strawberry dacquiri. Cut down on your sweets! Bascially it's like how Orlistat or Alli pills are with fats! But Immodium does wonders! After three weeks I was able to have a little cup of ice-cream wihtout my stomach acting up... but you may have some loose stools depending on what you are eating. When you notice your trigger food, try not to eat much of it.. or if you do... take an immodium tab before eating.

FYI... it's well worth the time and effort taking Met.. I was able to get preggo the first month taking Met and I never O on my own.
