IIRC, it is in part according to the numbers on a glucose test. Also your body is still producing insulin -- it just isn't working correctly.

I believe if your fasting glucose is between 100 - 120 they call it pre-diabetes. If it is over 120 they call it diabetes.

If you consistently get high BG readings, the most important ones are after eating. And I think if you're fasting A1c level is over 6, you're diabetic. Also if you're pre- diabetic, you can still do things to prevent becoming diabetic, losing weight, excersize, low carb diet etc.

a low carb diet and regular exercise is the best way to stay in that pre diabetes group but as far as i know there is no way to get rid of it for sure. not to be a downer, but if diabetes runs in your family as well its less likely you will keep from ever actually having it. Webmd is a good place to do some research and find healthier ways of living. good luck hun!

If you have pre-diabetes consider it a warning....you are on the road to diabetes and maybe, if you work hard at it, you can prevent getting it for a long time.

No...there is NO cure for diabetes....a person can lose weight, eat right and excercise, get completely off their medicines and have no symptoms but they are STILL a diabetic, like it or not. They are a controlled diabetic, or some call it a symptom free diabetic. If they stopped doing what they do to control it, it would be right there waiting to hurt them.

The difference between pre-diabetic and full blown diabetes is just a few points on a glucose monitor. Many people say being pre-diabetic is like being a little bit pregnant. But right now doctors don't agree with that....so if you're pre diabetic then NOW is the time to go see a dietician, to learn about portions, carbs/fiber/protein combinations, and to start taking any measure that you can to get it under control.

It also means that you will most likely, eventually, be a full blown diabetic. How soon that happens, now or at 70, depends on your genetics as much as anything else....so do what you can to fight it, but don't be fooled into thinking that you control it completely. And if you can't control it, don't beat yourself up....you have no say when it comes to your genes.

The absolute best website about diabetes on the internet that I've ever found (and I even run one! lol) is the Type 2 discussion board at the Amercian Diabetes Association's website. That entire site has all the information you're looking for and the people on that board are the best. I strongly, strongly recommend going there! I learned more on that board than from any doc I've ever had.

I'll tell ya....if I can ever help even one person stay off the road to diabetes and keep them from joining me in this then I've done something.

I told a friend once that I'd like to go to the girls gym class at the local high school and show them what I look like in a bikini....then show them how quickly I lose my breath.....and then show them how many pills I take in a day. Then tell them that I'm one of the lucky ones! And maybe, MAYBE, convince a few of them that gym class is not a joke and chocolate does not buy happiness! lol

If I can't be a good example then let me be a terrible warning!
