Default pre-natal vitamin questions

Okay, my dr told me that I should take pre-natal vitamins for at least a month before DH and I start trying. She said the most important thing was to find a pre-natal with 1mg of folate. My questions: is folate the same thing as folic acid? And can anyone recommend a good pre-natal?

All of the ones I've looked at have 800mcg of folic acid, so it's still 200mcg short. If I took one of the 800mcg with a 400mcg of folic acid, would that be bad?

Mandy--I just started taking one again. I think most of the prescription prenatals have 1mg. Ask your doctor to give you some samples in the office. Take the different kinds and see which one you like the most (some have weird tastes or can cause side effects for different people). Then, ask her for a prescription for the one you like.

Yes, folate and folic acid are the same thing!

All my doctors (4 of them so far!) have said that any over the counter multi-vitamin is fine and not to bother with pre-natal (though those are fine too) so long as there's enough folic acid and less than 100% vitamin A. So I've been taking children's chewable from Target (the generic version of the Flintstones).
