Pregnancy & Lap Band Surgery/Gastric Bypass Surgery
I wasn't sure where to post this
I want a baby, badly...I also want to be healthy and thinner. Strike that, I NEED to be healthy and thinner. I have asthma, anemia, PCOS and Hypothyroid...some if not most of this will go away if I lost weight. I am very very overweight.
I've always always been overweight since childhood, nothing seems to work for me. With Hypothyroid and PCOS I got a double-whammy of weight gain/weight loss issues.
If you plan to get pregnant, but are considering either Lap Band or Gastric Bypass surgery...which would you attempt to have a baby first?
I'd be worried about the weight gain and affects on the body post-op. Does anyone know about this?
The women at my work who have had it done are 40-50 and past their childbearing ages in their life...
Which comes first...pregnancy or weight loss surgery?

Hi misschrystal - I'm new here, just discovered this thread when I was searching for a new lap band forum and thought I'd reply to share my experiences.
I also have PCOS and am trying to conceive. I'm 2.5 years post op, and am 15 pounds heavier now than when I had my surgery. The lap band is helpful in restricting sticky carbs (like rice and bread) but not the good/naughty ones, like cookies. It's also good for restricting protein, such as meat and nuts. Anything mushy (mashed potatos, hot cereal) or anything meltable (ice cream) will slide right down. Basically, you need to eat like a man (as my hubby says) ie lots of meat, for it to be effective. If one isn't committed to a lifestyle change, it won't work.
I've been TTC for a year and my OB recently gave me a lecture on how my weight is the biggest reason I'm not ovulating and unable to get pregnant. So, I bought a treadmill, got my band tightened for greater restriction, and start clomid this month.
Oh, and the funnest thing about having PCOS and the band? Metformin are too big to fit through the opening of my stomach. :-/ I've been on liquids all day because I was lazy last night and only cut my metformin in half, rather than in thirds, and it's been stuck in there all day (you can't eat solids when you have a band blockage). They can make metformin into a liquid, but it's the nastiest thing you've ever experienced.
I had wls to help improve my fertility (although I did not ttc before wls, I knew I needed to get healthy first). At just over 2 years post op, I unexpectedly found myself pregnant. The 6mo before my lap rny (3/06) I did not have a period. My cycles were better after surgery - always came in 28 days when on Nuva Ring (post op). I was always told that I could have a healthier pregnancy after weight loss than being heavy (you only need roughly 300 more cals per day to sustain a healthy pregnancy. This is NOT difficult to do after wls). Have the surgery. Get healthy. Then get pregnant. I cannot stress enough how wonderful Susan Maria Leach is and how much I learned from her message board. (Not to mention the supplements she sells are top notch). google her name and you can get to her website - I haven't posted enough here to obtain the privilege of adding websites to my posts.
i did the obese pregnancies first, then the surgery. I want to encourage you to not be dumb like me. Not only do I now have to care for my kids, while healing (thankfully I'm fully healed now), but I had a disabled son to carry around, slowing my healing process. IF i had it to do again, I'd have had the surgery first.

I had RNY June 2007 - so I had my babies (all at once :-) pre-op .. and had no issues as far as my weight was concerned.. but with all of your other issues I would probably opt to get myself healthy first and then move onto having a baby. I think it would make your pregnancy healthier hence having a healthier you and baby.
Either way, I wish you luck on your journey - please keep us posted as to what you decide to do.

Also, I thought I would add that it will probably make getting pg a little easier once you have lost weight and gotten your body back in sync. We have several ladies on the WLS Buddy thread who are pg or have gotten pg post op without any meds after trying for a long time with meds before surgery. TTC is difficult enough - but when you throw extra stuff in the mix it makes it that much more difficult.

In my honest opinion, if you're serious about WLS then have it done first...especially if you've had a difficult road of infertility. I tried for 8+ years to get pregnant prior to my Lap RNY surgery 8/04. Before surgery I never had periods...even provera did little to help me. Add on top of that high blood pressure, diabetes & IR, and OSA (obstructive sleep apnea). Of course I have to admit that having a baby was my main motiviation to WLS, but getting healthy was also important. At 16 months post op we went without protection and immediately got pregnant with DD1. I had an uneventful pregnancy and delivered a healthy girl. Then earlier this year we opted one more time to go without protection and boom. Pregnant again with DD2. The nice thing is that although I do take more than the normal dose of prenatal vitamins I'm healthy! I'm not gestational diabetic and my OB treats me like any other patient. In fact he told me when I was prego with DD1 that had it not been for my WLS & weight loss that I most likely would have never gotten pregnant.
Anyway both of my pregnancies following my RNY have been as normal as normal can get.
Good luck in your decision.
Kristy
