Unhappy pregnancy safe acne treatment

My doctor keeps telling me I can't use any treatment for acne while trying to conceive, as it may harm the fetus, if or when I do eventually fall pregnant.
In the mean time, I have to put up with very bad skin, worsened by massive changes in hormone levels due to the fertility treatment and non existant self esteem.
Does any one know of any treatment that is safe during pregnancy?

Erythomiycin is supposed to be safe for use during pregnancy. You will need a prescription and you should inform your dermatologist of your intention to become pregnant because it's been a while since I read about it and you know how rapid medical information changes. It's applied topically and while it's not as strong as other meds, it's something. In the meatime, I would try OTC meds with salycilic acid. Good luck!!!

hi. i am not sure about the safety of salicylic acid, but we are TTC and I am using Neutrogena Anti-blemish/Anti-wrinkle products. They are the FIRST OTC products to work for me, and I have tried everything, every brand. Proactive, skintactix, clinique...etc. Anyway, I use biore exfoliating make up removing wipes to get my make-up off. I use the Neut. cleanser, scrub, & moisturizer 2 times a day. I wash my face in the shower b/c the steam/heat seems to make the products work better than they do at the sink. I also have switched to mineral makeup and can tell a difference. I know how bad the fertility meds can mess with your face. It's depressing. I hope some of this helps. Good luck

also--I highly recommend microdermabrasion. it's costly but great!

I went to the dermatologist because I had been using perscription face wash and creams for my acne and wanted to make sure that they were pregnancy safe, which they were not. she prescribed a topical erythromycin gel that I don't like, and told me that the only over-the-counter meds that are safe during pregnancy is salicylic acid. no benzoyl peroxide, no sulfur. so, I used to use neutrogena, but wanted to try something new and bought this Oil of Olay Clarity face wash. I just started using it, but it seems to work pretty well. it's mild enough to use a couple of times a day, but seems to calm the breakouts. I'm also using Neutrogena oil-free moisturizer for sensitive skin, and oil-free toner. the combination of these 3 things seems to be working so far. I'm not on fertility meds yet though, so I'm not sure how it will work once I start. I actualy have an appointment with my gyno today!

I've been using tea tree oil, and Azealic Acid (Azelex-you need a prescription) during my pregnancy. I've been told both are safe.

erythromycin (topical and pills) is safe. i have used this for cysts after consulting with both my gyno and my dermatologist.

azealic acid is also safe.

i have heard mixed reports about salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide. some say that they're not safe, others say they're ok in small doses. i think it's ok if you're not using hyper-concentrated doses. most otc stuff should be ok.

Azelaic Acid(Azelex) falls in the category B durgs, meaning that it's not "expected" to harm a fetus, but they don't know for sure since they have not done any studies on humans. Plus it can be excreted in breast milk and it's a sulfur derivitave, so I wouldn't call it safe, I think it should be used only after Erythomicin failed, and at least after the first trimester, when development is most critical.

Smile Aspirin facial

Have you tried aspirin facials? or spot treating with aspirin. I mix an aspirin with a bit of water to make a paste, put it on the spot and then cover it with a band aid. Even huge pimples are gone over night.

Smile diet

People used to follow up diet to lose unwanted pounds and maintain the healthy weight. But it should be healthy at any lost.

I use calendula essence to spot treatment, other than that I use three different lush products which work great on my face. Coalface, which is an exfoliant soap. Sea Salt which is another exfoliant (also for body), and then herbalism which is a gentle mask. I also use vanishing cream for the winter when my skin gets dry.

Everyone's faces are really different though, but this combination works for me like crazy!

I find this a very confusing topic!
I am presently 17 weeks pregnant and while my face is as clear as can be, my back is another story! This is normal for me though when not on the pill.
I have heard and read so many conflicting things about what can and should not be used. I have heard that Salyclyic Acid ( I know it's spelled wrong) is NOT ok to use but that benzoyl peroxide in low concentrations is ok. Benzoyl peroxide is a category c because they do not know what effects it has as they clearly can't do testing on pregnant humans.
I think that it's a very grey area and no doctor has ever told me not to use something, and none of my pregnancy books discuss this either. I am having to make my own decisions based on conflicting information which is somewhat of a gamble and very annoying!
