Thanks Kat! I printed all the materials and have already made notes for my doctor's appt tomorrow. Unfortunately, Kaiser keeps making my appts with Physicians Assistants so I dont know how much PCOS info I will get out of this appt but it will def help in finding an endocrinologist.

For first-time doctor appts:Tell about self-diagnosis or let doctor do his/her job?
I will have an appointment with my doctor tomorrow. And I guess my question reflects on the fact that I have never beel officially diagnosed with PCOS, just a self-diagnosis with a help of ultrasound, hormone results (all done in Europe, without any mention of PCOS), and other classic symptoms. Also, my medical insurance binds me to the college health center and hence I have limited control over who my family physician/gynecologist is. Plus I am not sure that in this health center doctors know about PCOS, how well they know, etc.
SO, tomorrow, during my appointment, what is a better strategy? Just to tell the symptoms--like 50 days of non-stop bleeding and let the doctor sort out the rest with his own questions, tests, referrals to other types of doctors, OR to honestly say that I suspect having PCOS?
I am inclined to go with the first option because I want to have an American doctor examine me for the first time and see what he/she has to say. Secondly, I am worried that even if the doctor knows about PCOS, he might not know that Cushing's syndrome, thyroid complications might have the same symptoms. SO, I don't want the doctor to use my answer as an easy way out and to potentially endanger me by diagnosing one thing while I have another and require a different treatment.
Please, any advice and opinion would help. Thanks!
Thank You so much!!!! This material is so informative. Now I have a question should I see my actual doctor, or the nurse practitioner. I have found that I am bombarded with info i never knew! What should I do, and where should I start?
Thank you for the questionaire Kat, very useful!. I been diagnosed with pcos not long ago and I have another appoitment with my doctor on december 19th, I'm hoping to be able to take the questionaire with me so I don't forget what I really need to ask.

i know how you feel...i too am 260lbs and i really want to lose weight. i bought some books like the IR diet and a book called The Natural Diet Solution for Pcos and Infertiltiy; i hope these books will help me.
basically i keep reading over and over how us that are overweight with PCOS and IR need to have good eating habits. cut back on carbs and eat more fruits and veggies; something i dont do.
im going to my new gyn on thursday to see if he can help me.
dont worry your not alone ive been so sad lately that ive been snapping at my husband and being mean to people.
i wish i could just get my snap my fingers and all of this pcos stuff would go away.
ill keep you in my prayers. good luck finding a doctor in you area.
I wanted to say thanks Kat! Your information was so helpful when I saw my doctor last. My primary doctor was very hesitant to refer me to an endocrinologist until I brought up a lot of the info you said would be helpful to review with my doc. This site and all the topics are just SOO helpful!!
I'm so glad to have found this information. I am planning to go to a new doctor but don't really know where to go to. My OB is okay, but I have PCOS and I'm TTC so I am looking for someone who is a specialist for this. The guideline of questions to ask the doctor is really helpful. Thanks!
