Dr. prescribed met today and I will start tomorrow. I have been reading A LOT of the met posts and it's hard to know what to expect as it seems everyone is different.
My only concern is that I have been prescribed 500mg three times a day. It seems most cysters start much lower than that. What do you think?
We'll see how it goes,...I remain optimistic!!
I'd love to hear any suggestions to help me get started with this!
THANKS!!

Most Dr's and pharmacists suggest working up to 500mg, 3x a day, gradually. It is typical to do 500 for a week or even two, then add the next, then the next. It allows your system to get used to the meds. Side effects can be trickly, and 1500 all at once could be a lot to handle. I'd check with the pharmacist/dr.

Are you on regular Met or Met XR? If regular met you need to space out your pills over the day. Met XR you can take all at once. I liked the XR for that reason. Like the PP said, you absolutely need to take the dose up slowly. At least 1 pill for the 1st one or maybe even two weeks, before adding the 2nd. You can experiment too, just see how your body reacts to it. It seems that some don't have many side affects from 1 pill, but adding the 2nd pill takes the body some getting used to.
congrats on starting met! I haven't been on it in 2 years, but am about to start again to TTC. Last time on it just made me so sick, there was just no reason to stay on it. For me it was weird, when TTC my DD I had minimal met side effects. but after I had her, I started up on Met again and just couldn't handle it.
Another helpful hint, take your pill(s) with a large glass of milk and during a meal. That always helped me to ward off any possible side effects!!

I just started met this week, and I'm taking 500mg twice a day to total 1000mg daily.
Good luck!

my endo started me at 5oo once a day, building up to 500 twice a day. I find that as long as i avoid greasy/fatty/sugar foods as much as poss, and always eat with the met i can manage it
eva
This is second day, (only taking one 500 mg pill at first.)
I have been eating reduced carbs and making good food choices in fear of s/e and so far, so good.
I have definetely decided to work my way up to the full 1500 mg.
I am really hoping this will help with some weight loss and regulating cycles so TTC will be more promising.
What have your experiences been with weight loss and met?

I was prescribed 500mg of Metformin 3x daily about 6 weeks ago. I am staying hopeful because I have not been feeling well (fatigue, nausea, headaches and mood swings) for the past 6 weeks. I have also not had AF since November 3rd.
Hi, I was also prescribed Met, 3-6-08 we are ttc #1, I am a little unsure of the whole carb thing, I know the diet is supposed to be low carbs but I don't get it still does anyone have any common ideas I guess for like low carb meals? I'm sorry if this sounds really dumb, but can I not eat a sandwich anymore or am I supposed to just avoid bread???

ashlynn3210 - Sorry to hear that you are not feeling weel with met. Perhaps if you tried starting with low dose (500 mg) and then increase to 1000mg and then to 1500 mg it might give your body a chance to better adjust and perhaps reduce the s/e you are experiencing. Last week I was also Rx 1500mg to start but after reading a lot on this board, I started with only 1 - 500mg tablet. Next week, I will increase to 1000mg and then if everything is going good, I will increase to the 1500 mg the week after that!
I can't say this from past experience as I've been only on met for 3 days but I keep reading everyehere that gradually increasing the met is the best way to go.
With regards to AF, hopefully when the met settles down and begins working, AF will show up! I am like you, AF doesn't like to visit regularly (hardly at all).
GOOD LUCK!!
LovinTheCompany - In terms of carbs, I did a carb - free diet (atkins) a couple of years ago and the weight loss was phenomenal! But, just as you said, I was frustrated wtih not being able to enjoy a sandwhich properly or even some fruits for that matter! I quickly tired of what I could eat and really did not enjoy tracking and counting carbs and the "new lifestyle" sucked. It wasn't for me! So, at the moment what I am doing is just thinking "reduced carbs" in my own head ~~not low carb or carb - free...I am just making better choices by adding ALOT more green vegetables and significantly reducing (but not giving up) bread, potatoes, rice pasta etc. I space up my carbs, only eating a portion here and there so it's easier to deal with teh carbs I do digest!. I just reduced the amount of "white" things on my plate and replaced them with more vegetables! I replaced my snacks with fruit, fruit cups, etc. I also reduced my tea and diet pop intake and replaced with water.
Just a change in thinking and making choices. It's working. I lost over 5 llbs this week.
So, don't get frustrated trying to strictly eat how science tells us to, but be selective each day, gradually make changes that work for you to "reduce" your carbs and you'll get there!
GOOD LUCK!

Thank you for the information, I appreciate you taking time out to read my post and reply. Hopefully I can continue with this whole low carb thing, the final pay off I believe will be well worth it. It is just so hard to stick to something that isn't showing instant results, at least for me I am soo im patient...
I was Rx'd Metformin for help with weight loss and hopefully to help my thinning hair last week. I have yet to start it but I was also given 500mg three times daily but was told to start with twice daily for at least a week and move up from there.
This is probably a really stupid question, but is it possible to get pregnant on Metformin without having periods? Do you know anyone that has?
Well - you can get pregnant prior to having your period. Basically the met helped you to ovulate and you caught that eggie. I guess it is possible, but I don't know of anyone that it has happened to.
