I am 16 and have had PCOS symptoms since last year. It was strange because the symptoms seemed to appear pretty suddenly. I was the type of girl who could eat anything and not put on a pound and I had pretty regular cycles and then suddenly I started gaining some weight and I lost my period. I went to a nutritionist who put me on a diet and supplements to regain my period that didn't work. I then went to another doctor who said that taking high pharmaceutical doses of vitamin D would restore a normal menstrual cycle (at that point I hadn't had a period in 6 months). I got my period in about 2 months. I had a few irregular cycles after that and then I got lazy with taking the vitamins and my cycles dissapeared again for three months or so. At this point, my mom took me to a gynecologist because she was worried that I might have a growth in my overies or uterus. They gave me an ultrasound and everything looked good my ovaries actually don't have any cysts on them. My blood work however showed the classic PCOS androgen pattern and my mom has the syndrom so they diagnosed me with PCOS. They wanted to put my on the BCP, but I refused because I have heard so many stories about women who have to stay on for their whole lives. I just want to resolve this naturally. Also I really want to have children and I've heard that the BCP can possibly hurt fertility even more when taken over many years. I upped my dosage of vitamin D and got one period in November, but I've been taking the vitamins regularly and I haven't had a period since then. Maybe my condition is worsening? I just don't know what to do or if I should do anything. I am not in pain or anything. I am just bothered that this is not normal and that I may not be able to conceive because I am obviously not ovulating regularly if at all. I also hope that I've not done this to myself, because I started to develop symptoms around the time that I became a vegetarian ( I stopped this after a year because one of the doctors that I went to put me on a gluten free diet and it became to restrictive to not eat both gluten and meat). Is it normal for symptoms to develop so suddenly? I am curious also about herbal treatments. My symptoms are not terribly severe although my androgens are high and I go months without my period and have some acne. I am not overweight, just a bit chunky in the middle. Do you think that I should be taking more action to treat this? Thank you all so much!

You are so lucky to have found this early! I honestly wouldn't worry too much. You're young and you have plenty of time to regulate yourself. I am not sure about the symptoms coming on so suddenly or about the effects of being a vegetarian.
The pill can screw up your hormones after you've been on it for awhile and then stop. It is normal to have screwy hormones after stopping the pill but typically your body will straighten itself up within a few months of stopping. Since you have already been diagnosed PCOS and your hormones already seem to be a bit abnormal, then you might want to stay away from it OR take a mild birth control pill.
What you should do is go see an endocrinologist. They are the most knowledgeable about hormones and PCOS. If you have already had a hormone panel (blood work) done, let us know your results- request these results from the doctor if you don't have them. If you haven't had a complete hormone panel done, go see an endo and get it done. This will help determine if you have a severe imbalance and/or need any kind of meds or supplements.
Since you don't get your period regularly, you may have low progesterone. This is very common. There's a few different things you can do for that, and it should make your period come. There's Provera, which is synthetic progesterone- you take a pill for 10 days, then stop, and your period should come within 2 weeks, usually less. There's also natural progesterone suppositories (yes, gross), and cream. I am currently using the cream- just started, so I don't know how well it works yet.
Anyways, my point is that you need to know your hormone levels to better determine what you might need to do. Try to relax, you're young and healthy so you should be able to straighten out your body easily adn won't have to rush it.
Feel free to PM me or post your blood results when you have them :-)
