Probably a DUMB IC question....(living child also briefly mentioned)
I had been thinking about this for awhile, and finally braved up enough to ask (because I feel like it may be a dumb question).
Can pg CAUSE an IC also? I know most of you who have had it seemed to from the get-go, but I was wondering if pg can cause or worsen it?
Ok, the reason I wonder is only because of checking my cervix during charting....DD was born somewhat early, but close enough to full-term to be ok.....and I know a pg/vaginal birth can make your cervix stay somewhat open....but I feel like mine is even more open feeling after losing #2 last year (even though that was an early loss). <~~~of course I could be just paranoid. I am not suggesting I have an IC, but was wondering if you could "get" one.
Sorry if it is completely an obvious yes or no ....I just don't know, and I guess it is better to know one way or another if that is possible in the future.
anybody with suspicions, imo, should be watched like a hawk. there's no reason not to, and a mother's instinct can be right sometimes on these longshots. my doc said he can 'test' for a potential case, very unscientifically but to get an idea, by trying to insert a dilator in a non-pg cervix and see if it opens right up. whether it does or not is just one piece of the puzzle, and of course the real test is what the weight of a pregnancy sitting on it will do. good question for a doc who has experience with this stuff! good luck next time.

I agree with the others...on the other hand i think your cervix is sort of like a balloon...once you blow it up you can never get all the air out of it again...it wont ever look the same as it did before kwim??? So if you've already had a vaginal birth their might be some normal stretching... but i sure advocate it getting monitored more closely if you have any suspicions.
And i dont there are any dumb questions around here...Lord knows i'd be in trouble if that were the case

i do know of some cases where ic started after prior full term births.......in fact, my doc has a patient who had 3 babies and then lost the 4th to ic (possibly from the traumatic and speedy labor of the 3rd baby). i also know of a woman on abbyloopers (abdominal cerclage group) that had FIVE healthy babies and then lost #6 and 7 to IC. she went on to get cerclage placed after the losses and carried #8 to term. so i guess the answer is that yes, in some rare instances, IC can be caused by previous births/pregnancies.

No dumb questions here! I agree with Kim - we'd all be in trouble.
I've heard of women showing up with IC after successful pregnancies. I don't think the prior pregnancies CAUSED their IC, but more that they were INCREDIBLY lucky to dodge the bullet the first time.
There are a few exceptions - if you have a particularly traumatic delivery, that could probably cause IC in future pregnancies. If you had singletons before, and then carry multiples, same thing.
I agree with the others on this - follow your intuition and ask to be monitored closely. My intuition was screaming IC all through my pregnancy with Rivi, but my doc wouldn't listen.
