i am getting my merina iud out in the next few weeks, and as we are not TTC we will use condoms for b/c. my issue is that i've never used them before and i'm not very trusting of them. i have high blood pressure so i'm not allowed on the pill, any other suggestions of what i can do to put my mind at rest??
We would like a baby but are not in the financial position to have one yet. in a few years time, we will TTC.
I am not too trusting of them either, since I have had one fail (it was one too many lol), and after speaking to a specialist sexual health doctor, I discovered that this is quite a frequent thing. I would suggest you ask your doctor about going on a mini-pill/Progestogen-only pill to back up your contraception, since you have (I assume) tolerated the Merina coil progestogen method well. Ask about Cerazette, the newer POP as it is supposed to be more effective than the older ones due to its promary function being to inhibit ovulation, which should reduce your chances of developing cysts.
Otherwise you could try the non-hormonal cap or diaphragm. You would need to see a doc or nurse to me measured and fitted with one.
hey thanks for your advice. i didnt tolerate the merina very well, so i'm trying to stay away from the hormone pills, i'm getting the iud out on monday which should be interesting!!!
i might have to ask about the diaphragm etc when i'm there
Ahh right yes I can understand that. I had a non-hormonal IUD and to begin with it was ok but then it made me bleed constantly and have awful cramping all the time. So I had it out and feel loads better. Personally I find I NEED the oestrogen part in hormonal contraception otherwise I have more problems, but it is the opposite for many women.
If you want to steer clear of them, then yes I would recommend the cap or diaphragm.
Hey you... Call up and make an appointment at Family Planning to see one of the nurses. It will be cheaper than the doctor and they know everything and anything about contraception. You know where they are? By the urgent doctors in the tall building.

^ I had the IUD and it seemed to give me more discomfort, especially if my ovaries were particular sensitive, so in some cases (especially if you have follicles/cysts), it could be a bad option. If your periods are already painful and give you bad cramps, expect them to get far worse with the coil. Most nurses will warn you of this and suggest something else. Otherwise it is very reliable as contraception, and you don't need to remember pills etc! x
