Default Progesterone?

Hi everyone,

I was wondering if anyone else was prescribed progesterone to bring on their cycles. What sort of success have you had in keeping a monthly cycle? Any advice regarding this med is appreciated!

Jessica

I used prometrium for 6 cycles before I concieved DS and I was able to bring on a regular AF. I would just take it for 12 days or so after I thought I O'd (I was charting).
After I wean DS, I will probably use it again. Or I might try natural progesterone cream which is available OTC.

violamarie ~ Did you see any difference in your weight and other symptoms? What were your side effects if any?

I took Provera for 3 months, and while I didn't see many physical side effects, other than sleepiness, I was in a BAD MOOD while on the medication. I took it the 1st-9th of every month and then I would typically get my period about 3 days after finishing the medication. It definitely worked to bring on my period, but I found that the side effects were not worth it. (As did my husband!!) I finally told my doctor that my mood swings were so severe on the medication that I wanted to stop it. He then put me on Metformin, and we'll see how it goes! Good luck to you!

Tam- the only thing I noticed was some dizziness/fatigue about 30 min to an hour or so after each pill. But it went away... and Prometrium never affected my weight or anything. I think it's a good way to regulate your cycle without using BCP. Howver, it does nothing to help with IR if that's one of your concerns. Also, I really prefer Prometrium to Provera- I thought the latter was very strong and seemed to aggravate my acne.

I took Provera 3.5 weeks ago. I had no side effects. I got some very scant spotting at the time. 5 days ago I got a regular AF w/o taking Provera again. So I'm hoping it jumpstarted my cycle.

Provera is a synthetic progestin; the synthetic progestins in general have been known to worsen IR, and can be androgenic depending on the exact one. Prometrium is natural micronized progesterone, and has not been known to worsen IR.

On synthetic progestins, I was a raging, crazy, fat, acne-fied *itch. On the real stuff, it just kinda makes me mellow, sleepy sometimes.

But unfortunately it wasn't enough to reign in or regulate AF either.

WOW!!!!
I'm on Provera right now to actually stop my seemingly unstoppable AF - She has made herself right at home and didn't have any plans of leaving, so we're trying to evict her! I've also used Progesterone to start AF, so I think it's not used exclusively to bring it on, but more so to regulate cycles.

I'm so glad to have found this thread... I have noticed extreme mood swings lately... But thought I was mad at AF... This explains so much.

I wish my doctor would have told me about this... You might not be able to control your mood swings, but at least if you know that you're "swinging" you can control your reactions!

It all makes sense now - Thanks guys!
