Astrid318- what supps/dose were you on? Injections are the most effective if vaginal supps don't raise your p4 high enough.
KimberlyMarie- Without trying to overwhelm you with information:progesterone is a hormone that is produced mostly after ovulation. It's primary job is to keep your period at bay and give your body a chance to concieve before your estrogen levels rise, and your period starts. Taking progesterone supps is similar to taking birthcontol (which are also progesterone, but a different kind) you have to stop when your period is due if you're not pregnant or chances are- your period will not start. This isn't true of everyone- some women can start their periods even on low doses of progesterone. I wasn't one of those people, and always stopped my progesterone supp, after day 14 of my luteal phase. As far as your p4 level, it isn't bad, but npc could help your numbers be a little higher. Certainly worth a try. GL!
sabock- I'm sorry for your loss. If I were you, I would stay on the NPC if you get a BFP. It is true, that progesterone can delay a miscarriage (that's progesterones job- to keep you from bleeding) but at the same time, by taking it, you are reducing the risk of having a low progesterone miscarriage.
dberg- Congratulations!! Your p4 is a little on the low side, but not abnormally so. I would continue testing your p4 until YOU are comfortable. GL!
Malblo1288- I don't know if your miscarriages are progesterone related- testing is the only way to find out. I can tell you that, hCG is only produced once the embryo is implanted (about 3-4 days after ovulation) if you were getting positive HPT's/BETA's then you had implanted. There are so many possible reasons for a baby to stop development. You probably need some additional testing, and to see a specialist/endo. Try to find someone educated in PCOS, that you feel comfortable with. I wish you the best of luck. ~*~*~*~*~*

Hello ladies! I asked my doctor about progesterone supplements yesterday and she told me that the research is inconclusive, but that it wouldn't hurt. So I of course said that I would like to do that. She said that she wouuld only give me a prescription to 8 weeks because that is when the placenta takes over. Now I have two questions. First, is up to 8 weeks enough? Second, why does the prescription say do not take if you are pregnant? Thanks!

Your doctor is outdated. There have been several studies on progesterone in pregnancy (including Europe) that have been very conclusive. But anyhoo to answer your questions:
The placenta takes over production of progesterone at 9-10 weeks gestation (the 11th through 12th week) of pregnancy, but in PCOS (it's very technical- so I'm not going to go into full detail) it's doesn't always happen, and can lead to miscarriage/preterm birth/toxemia. That's why it's SOOOOOOOOO important to test your levels in early pregnancy.
I'm not sure why your rx says not to take while pregnant? You might ask your doctor about that? Natural progesterone is safe during pregnancy- synthetic is different. You can read about it on the first page.
Thanks for the info Sugarbug! I am just concerned because my prescription is only through the 8th week of pregnancy. I don't know if that is enough.

* I found the answers to my previous question... but still wondering about the other... lol
If you remember from my other post, I had one Progesterone test come back (before Clomid) with a number of 10.6 ... is it likely I won't need to supplement prog if I have conceived this time? Does Clomid aid in Progesterone creation?
Thanks!

That's a hard question to answer in a quick post- a short answer (in my opinion..) is- No, clomid does not help with progesterone production (if you want a detailed answer- you can pm me your number, and I'll give you a call ) Anyhoo- 10.6 is a really low level to carry a pregnancy. The first post in this thread, can explain how the levels work and where they should be.
Good luck with this cycle- I'm crossing my fingers for ya! ~*~*~*~*~*
I wanted to add that since I last posted I switched from compounded progesterone to Crinone 8% and was very successful with it -- even after the compounded ones dropped me to a level under 10 around 6 weeks along.
If your insurance covers them, ask for them!

Hi all,
Has been a very long time since I have posted anything, or even been on this site. But on Monday I miscarried my first baby at 11wks, the baby passed at 8.5 wks. We have been trying for 5 yrs, and had our first round of IVF (ICSI) and placed one embryo and we got pregnant. My levels of progesterone dropped when the doc had me try lowering my dose to every other day.. and I honestly think that is why my Baby passed.
But back to why I am writing... Suga I saw that you had said you had a reaction the the progesterone in sesame oil, and I also did; I found out from my IVF nurse that that is not uncommon. But we switched me to one in an olive oil base and I had much better reaction to it... next time I think I will try the double KO that you did with supps and injectables.
Best Wishes,
Beck

SugarBug ~ I love that this tread is a sticky! I have learned soooo much from it!! I had a chem pg last May and wasn't sure why - only suspected low progesterone. I just was tested on Monday (CD22) and it came back as 9.3. I was re-tested yesterday (CD25) and it came back 5.9. Doc prescribed oral prometrium 200mg/day to take 3dpo-13/14dpo, then HPT to see if pg or not. After reading this thread, is oral prometrium effective enough to take? How do I know if it's synthetic or natural? Doc said it is natural, but how do I know for sure? Synthetic isn't good to take, right?

I am highly confused about a few things. My old Doctor was very much into herbal therapies. I loved her to death. She of course moved far away. My new Doctor thinks it is all a bunch of hooey. I spoke to him about progesterone and he said there isn't enough to back it. I went to my Obgyn and she said well when you get pregnant come back in and we will test and see... OK this makes me bang my head against the wall. My insurance covers NOTHING so I order most of my stuff from Mexico.
Getting to the point here.... I have the natural wild yam cream here but was told it is useless to use for progesterone for pregnancy. I have read about crinone but after reading this thread am confused about it. I hate shots! The other progesterones are pills but are synthetic and are bad for a baby??? I'm confused!!!!!!!!!!
My doctor prescribed progesterone suppositories the day after I O'd. I have been taking it 2 times a day since. I am on cd 12 and I am wondering if the progesterone will give you pregnancy symptoms. I have been having pregnancy symptoms but the hpt was negative. Any advice?

I was on suppositories after several cycles. They do give you a sense of a false positive. My doc had me stay on them until AF started. That was the one thing I hated about those darn things not to mention how messy they were!
Good luck to you!

It could, sometimes with just progesterone (in all its forms; supps, injections, hydroxyprogesterone, etc) and sometimes with a combination of estrogen and progeseterone (such as in birth control)
