I didnt get a chance to read all of the posts in this thread but i have something to add. ( If it hasn't been already)
Getting your progesterone levels checked even when not PG has saved my life literally.
Long story short my DH and i have been ttc for over 2 years.
Had my blood tested, dh sperm count ect.. was diagnosed with PCOS.
One month ago I had a D&C done due to abnormal bleeding and nonexistant progesterone levels.
The biopsy of the tissue they removed from the D&C came back with bad news.
Due to the progesterone difficency and high levels of estrogen i developed Endomitrial hyperplasia, a pre-cancerous condition caused by high levels of estrogen with no progesterone to counteract it.
I am currently on 40mg of provera for the next 3 months in hopes of correcting the imbalance and hopefully being able to TTC again. I am having another D&C in febuary and hoping for good news.
My doc told me if I was 45 he would suggest a Hysterectomy tomorrow.
Since being on the provera my mood, appetite and total well being has changed. I think alot of it had to do with relief.... sounds silly i know but just knowing what the problem was and knowing how to fix it was a huge blessing.
I have a good chance of being able to ttc again.
Just hoping for good results.
I had no idea this condition existed as it normally appeares in women going through menopause.
Having PCOS was the contributing factor in developing this.
I will have to have a hysterectomy done eventually to prevent this from going any further. We would just like another chance at expanding our family.
Take care ladies sorry if this info has been repetitive.
Leigh

Thanks so much for sharing your story, and information Leigh! I had no idea that PCOS would cause that, but it makes complete sense. I'm sorry your going through it now Lots of prayers your way for a speedy recovery, and that you can get back TTC soon!
i have posted her before and asked about the progesterone.well last week i found out i was pregnant and i went to the dr. they did all kinds test took blood and all that stuff they did not examine me i just spoke to the nurse practioner and that was it i had for got to ask about the progesterone i was just to excited well i had another dr apptment yesterday to talk to the dr about staying on the met. wich he said no. but i say yes. and i asked him if he should test me for low progesterone and he said no becuase he doesnt use it becuase there have been contriversy about it cuasing birth defects. last night and this morning i misscarried and i am so devistated. And i wonder if the baby would have had a chance if they had checked my horomone levels last week when i found out i was pregnant . So i just need some advice as to what i should do from here i still want to try for a baby i am not giving up.this was my first preg.Last night i said i never want to try again i was just a mess but i will not give up.do you think i should get another dr.this will be the third one. thanks for your time
Sugarbug-
Fantastic thread. I was hoping you'd shed some light on your PIO experience. I am taking them everyday, and have been for two weeks now. According to the Dr. I will be on them through my first tri. I have some questions for you however...
1.) Does the pain get any better? It seems that, even though I alternate cheeks, my body doesn't heal completely before injecting another shot. I have hard lumps developing from the oil that my body has yet to absorb, and I am feeling like my body might not ever absorb it...Did you experience the same feeling?
2.) Can my body get too much progesterone? Should I insist upon staying on suppositories throughout my whole pregnancy? I delivered twin girls in July at 22wks. They passed on after only 20 minutes. The Dr. is assumming I have IC, which I sure could, but I don't want to take any chances. I think I should insist on cerclage AND to continue suppositories. Agree?
3.) When you became allergic to your PIO shots, did you break out? I have developed some crazy red blotches, but only around the site of injections...no where else on my body. I always thought if I were allergic, my whole body would let me know, so to speak.
OK, I am done asking questions. It is just nice to have someone with experience to bounce my worries off of. If you have time, I would really appreciate any insight into your PIO experience.
Thanks much...take care!!!

bubbles of joy- I'm so sorry for your loss I know exactly how you feel. I'm sorry my reply is so late... I was out of town. Leaving your doctor is a personal choice- I can't tell you what to do. But I can tell you, a doctor should always listen to your feelings. His attitude, concerns me. Progesterone causes no birth defects, and his information is outdated. I would do, concerning you doctor, whatever makes you feel best. (((hugs))) If you need someone to talk to, feel free to e-mail me at sugarbug422@alaska.com.

I developed those same lumps, and had to stop taking the PIO injections because of them. My doc told me it was an allergy to the seseme oil.

Bug~ What a wonderful post! I have been meaning to post about progesterone suppositories and haven't got around to it. When we have our next IUI in April my doc is going to put me on progesterone suppositories. Can you or anyone shed some light on them other than they are "messy"? How long you take them for, etc.
Viv~ So sorry to hear of your loss, I lost my nephew at 1 day old. God bless!

The supps are definitely messy. It helps if you lay down for awhile after taking one or to only take them at night before bed. When I was using them, I started the progesterone supps 3dpo (taking one in the morning and then another at night) until 14dpo (my Doc suggested taking them until 16dpo, but I always had my answer; +/- HPT by 14dpo) It took me an additional 2 days after stoping the supps to start AF- if AF didn't show by then, I would re-test just in case (although, that never happened) Make sure you store them in your fridge, and if you have any problems or need any additional help- feel free to ask!
Good luck on your next cycle!
Lots of BFP vibes your way+++++ Bug

Bug, Thanks for your help! I will be taking the progesterone after my IUI. I don't know how many days or for how long, so this is a new experience for me. How long did you have to lay down for?? I always run things short in the morning as it is!! How promising is it to take these things?? Thank you again!
Happy Easter!

I got pregnant on a rest cycle right before my 1st IUI- so I'm not 100% positive about when you start using supps during an IUI cycle, but I'm sure you could ask on the board, and a lot of ppl could share some experiences on that. It might also depend on your doctor, and what's been successful for him/her...?
I was told to lay down for 15-20 minutes (elevated on a pillow :p) after taking a supp... However, I didn't stick to it, and ended up just dealing with the leaking! I know- gross, but I'm being honest! :o LOL
I think how promising progesterone use is, really just depends on the person... Infertility (IMO) is all about finding the right formula for you. I needed lots of progesterone to have a successful pregnancy, and it ended up being the right formula for me, but for someone else- it could be something different. It's worth a try though, can't hurt, and might possibly be the right solution for you too.
Good luck!

My doc told me if I was 45 he would suggest a Hysterectomy tomorrow.
I have been diagnosed with this same thing, within these last 3 weeks, and the doctor put me on 10 mg provera for the first 14 days of the month for 3 mos. The Dr is trying to use this to revert the abnormal cells back to normal again. He said that when he does another unterine biopsy in June, and they are back to normal, perhaps we can try for a baby then....but if not...he is stressing a hystorectomy. I'm 34 with no children and no pregnancies whatsoever...and I don't want this surgery unless it's absolutely necessary. It sounds like the natural progesterone creams are prefered? Instead of provera?

do you think vaginal progesterone suppositories can be continued in the second and third trimester of pregnancy ?
One doctor told me that vaginal suppositories are not effective after 11 weeks and only PIO injection is effective.
I already had a pregnancy loss last year and so I am concerned about low progesterone miscarriage.

I haven't been diagnosed with a progesterone problem although I was given Provera to kick start my cycles when I got off the pill. Do you think it could harm me if I used the progesterone cream? I don't really have symptoms of low progesterone based on the symptoms you described above.

If you don't have any of the signs/previous miscarriages- your probably okay, but if your concerned- you could ask your doctor about it, and possibly take it until 11-12 weeks when the placenta takes over it's own production of progesterone.
GL to you & Congratulations!

saru- I took my vag. supps all the way through my pregnancy. I would have stayed on the PIO shots also (they are much more effective) but I developed an allergic reaction to them. My doc had me continue the vag. supps until 2 weeks before my C-section. I have no doubt that progesterone saved my pregnancy- My first p4 level was 15.3 (the highest it had ever been) on 200mgs a day (from 3dpo till I got my + HPT) I started the PIO shots right after I got my + beta, and my progesterone level went up to 16 (not much of an increase) So, then I combined the PIO shots with the supps (400mg) and finally my P4 levels got to a safe level of 38.1 I didn't test my P4 after I developed the allergy to the PIO shots, because it didn't really matter- I could only pray because I couldn't take them anymore, and that was that. Thankfully the supps were enough, and I had a healthy pregnancy.
HTH! GL!

I have forgot to take my progesterone twice this cycle, do you think it will have an effect?? I forgot to take it the first day which would have been Sunday and last night.... I just don't want to ruin something because I feel asleep before taking the supplement (vaginally).
Thanks!
