Default Progesterone-releasing IUD?

My ob-gyn believes that a hormone IUD would be a good idea for me. I have approx. one ovulation every three years, and extremely long periods every three months or so. I'm a bit sceptical of this, as I got really severe mood swings on Diane-35. She said these were probably caused by the estrogen, and as the IUD only has progesterone it shouldn't be a problem, but I thought it was the gestagen (progesterone) that caused mood swings? And she wasn't really able to tell me how the IUD will affect the PCOS, except that there's a chance the bleedings will stop. Anyone with any experience they would like to share? Please? I don't like the idea of loosing track of possible ovulations, but I guess it would be nice to skip the very heavy and painful bleedings...

Default

I have the Mirena. have had it for almost 2.5 yrs. I have not had a period in 8 mos (I also quit having them on the pill and patch-estrogen issues), but U/S says the lining of the uterus is thin, so no concerns there. The progesterone is more localized than taking the mini pill or depo. I have not had any significant weight gain (I stay at or around 130's)or mood issues (again, pesky estrogens) other than normal As for ovulations, I knew prior to my recent dx that I was oligoovulatory, so I never knew when I ovulated anyway. I had very light periods for the first year, and even those were hit or miss. I would say go for it as long as having no period after a time doesn't get on your nerves.
