Hi ladies,
I was diagnosed with PCOS/hypothryoidism since early last year. Since then I have gained 20 lbs (even though i work out 4 times a week) and my breasts have increased from a D to a DDD in over a year. It's been a nightmare. I found a great doctor in Houston and he has been helping me with the PCOS symptoms by putting me on the Omega Zone diet. It lowered my cholesterol and I noticed that I started to build muscle b/c thhe increase in protein in my diet. However, my boobs were STILL growing and my weight has been slow to come off. I am currently taking Armour thyroid, but it hasn't helped much with my metabolism.
Two weeks ago I started looking into getting a breast reduction. My gyno/RE nurse practioner suggested that I get my prolactin levels tested. they came back at a 15.2 ng/ml out of 17. When the lab nurse read me my result she said "oh that's normal". but something told me no that's not. I spoke with my manager about my breast reduction and she said her sister had the surgery as well, after h er breasts grew to an H. My manager has PCOS as well and her boobs went from an A to a C in 6 months. So she told me "go see my doctor". He's knowledgable about PCOS and he could have a different view on prolactin.
(In my doctor's defense. I didn't make an appointment with him after I got the results, b/c I wanted to try out my manager's doc. He might have been able to help, but I chose to go a different route since I've been seeing him for a year)
anyways, I go in to the new doctor and while we're waiting on my faxed reports I told him my prolactin levels are at 15 and my breasts keep growing. He said "BINGO" that's your problem. For a woman my age, my prolactin should be at 5/6 if not, I won't be able to get pregnant. (now this is 5/6 according to the scale my labs results came in at). He told me that's why I'm moody and experiencing serious breast growth.
It was like a huge weight off of my shoulder. I've been tested for pituitary tumors before and they came back negative and no doctor ever noticed my prolactin levels being high. I'm just thanking God right now that someone figured it out. I am still going to go through with the surgery, but at least I have to confidence to know that they won't grow back until I gt pregnant (like normal women).
He called my regular doctor since he respects him and he said "he's damn good" and they are working on a treatment plan for me which will include Dostinex and maybe a switch in Thyroid medications. I think this nightmare of a journey is ifnally over.
I've been taking supplements to help with my cycle regularity and the insulin resistance. I started insulite last Wednesday, I'll let you all know how it's going.
