Prometrium is a form of progesterone, and this is really not a "treatment" for PCOS, it is given so that you have a withdrawal bleed to shed your uterine lining every month so that it doesn't get too thick. It will not do anything to normalize your hormones, including your androgens.
As for what DOES work, you came to the right place to get some suggestions. A lot of people swear by exercise and diet. Many of us have tried or are currently trying Metformin -- some have bad side effects, some don't. Most people say it's worth a shot, and there are tricks for keeping the side effects to a minimum. Some people use alternative meds (check out the alternative med board and post there for suggestions).
My only issue with PCOS is in trying to get pregnant, so my treatment only involves stuff to make me ovulate, so I can't really help with the day-to-day part of it, but surf around soulcysters and you will find more info than you could ever use!
Dalai -- I recommend you see an endocrinologist who will take you seriously. There are several options for treating IR, not just Met, especially if you're not TTC. If your doctors don't take you seriously, find a new one, most importantly find a specialist who knows how to treat PCOS.
