Unhappy Prometrium or Go for a Hysterectomy

1st of all this board is amazing! I'm so happy to see I'm not alone. I was just diagnosed 6 days ago w/PCOS and testing for IR as we speak. Diabetes runs in my family so chances can be pretty strong it will come back w/unsettling news. Already I'm on Glumetza 1000MG and have to kick that up to 1500 mg tomorrow nite & I'm starting to "adjust" to it. Also 100 mg of Spiro.

My fear is the Prometrium 200 mg. I've read awful s/s about this stuff. Unlike most here, I DO NOT want kids. If I could take infertility for all of you I would because I've watched alot of girlfiends stuggle to get preg and it makes me feel so bad. I am nervouse about this stuff because it causes so much weight gain and right now I'm killing myself just to maintain the 7 lbs I've already gained. Weight gain for me makes me literally go insane.

Anyone know of this drug? Is there an alternative to it that has less s/s? Why do I need it anyway?

Thank you for any help

Sorry, forgot to mention my Doc said a hysterectomy would be the last resort if I can't get back to feeling "normal". Another one of my friends had a hyst and she said she feels the best shes ever felt in her life. Anyone have any suggestions?

Mia,
I have been on Prometrium and I never experienced those kinds of side effects before. I actually like Prometrium. Regardless of what you may have read, I really do not think Prometrium will make you more fertile. Prometrium is actually prescribed for women with PCOS to induce their periods. That's what I took it for. I had tried Provera, but I didn't react well to it.
I can't make the decision for you as to whether to take Prometrium or get a hysterectomy. The only thing I can offer is just advice. If I had a choice of either taking a pill that would induce my periods or have a hysterectomy done which would throw me into early menopause, I would opt for the pill.
The only side effect I ever had from Prometrium was feeling very loopy and tired about 30 minutes after taking it. That's why they advise women to take it when they go to bed at night. I didn't experience any weight gain or any other adverse effects.
Each woman is different in how they handle the medication though.

HTH.

I wouldn't worry so much about the prom. Not everybody has a horrible experience with it. I used Provera once, I had horrible cramps. I tried it a second time, not problems at all. It was a pain free AF, awesome.

Have you tried BCP, I mean if you don't want children why not try them? It can reduce some symptoms, prevent cysts in some cases, and make sure you get regular AF.

As for a hysterectomy, it will not solve the problem of PCOS. PCOS is more than just you ovaries, it's your hormones. Any doctor who recommends a hysterectomy as a cure for PCOS should be ditched, FAST.

Thank you so much for the replies. When I first posted this question, I was just diagnosed and completely losin' it! I actually started to feel wonderful on my Met-1500 mg, Folgard and Spiro 100mg. I started to shed that tummy bulge/bloat, hunger was way down and I had so much energy.

Now on my 4th day of Prometrium 200 mg-feeling a little tired and the hunger is coming back. Also a slight headache in the mornings. The thing is, my periods have always been regular. So if this med is for regular periods-I've already got it! And as far as BCP's-I think I've tried them all. My body never reacted well to them. I would feel sick, weight gain, irritable. I tried Depo-horrible reactions.

Anyone know why docs prescribe prometrium if I do not want to become prego and have normal periods? After he prescribed it, my blood work came back and my progestrone was 3.1 and he said it was suppose to be 15.

Mia,
Your bloodwork is why he prescribed the Prometrium.
Prometrium is a synthetic form of progesterone. Granted one of the side effects of Prometrium is a regularly induced period. But I can see why he prescribed it if he's wanting to raise your progesterone levels. Prometrium will help raise those levels.
