roar! I live in the USA and my doctor won't prescribe any of those drugs for PCOS! Granted, I've been on spiro for almost 6 months now, and it's helped the acne, but I can't say I see signs of hair REgrowth in my bald temples and hairline.
Propecia is a DHT conversion inhibitor. In other words, most people with PCOS have too much testosterone. It converts to DHT, a more potent form, in two types of cell receptors. When it converts, the DHT causes baldness and other fun stuff. The propecia blocks one receptor type of it from converting the testosterone to DHT, and has been shown with mild results to regrow head hair in men. Dutasteride, or Avodart, blocks both types. Neither type is approved for women in the USA--and your doctor should have made SURE you are on reliable birth control as propecia & dut can cause serious birth defects to a male fetus (male fetus needs that DHT to grow his male parts). Also, you can't donate blood while on these drugs.
That's really a weird first drug to try...most cysters started on spiro or metformin first. I haven't read that it's harmful or anything (except to male fetus) but it doesn't lower active testosterone levels (only DHT) or help insulin problems any.
Does your insurance actually pay it? My doctor said my insurance wouldn't touch thoe drugs as they are expensive!
