I just posted a comment in an 'anti-bush' thread elsewhere on this site. I will probably be flamed for what i said although it was not slanderous or anything. Then i came here to Canadian Cysters and noticed a DISTINCT difference in posts. We are here chatting about our health concerns, finding a doctor and each other, and being happy that we have found fashionable knee high boots to fit our calfs (which rocks cuz it took me forever to find some too). Yet behind all this i know that we are a deeply politcal and passionate believers in what we think to be right. Yet son't feel we have to slam any and every person who says different. So beautiflly Canadian.
What i posted on the other site was a reply to a joking comment about the borders being closed to our beef, but open for them to use our flu shots. What i said went something like this
"OH GOD NO! If you ever come to Canada please beware the evil mad cows. Maybe its all the diseased beef we are eating that makes us so peace loviing and compassionate"
I am so proud to be a canadian, and so glad YOU are my cysters.

I'm genuinely glad that you have Canadian pride. I think that we do get very "passionate" in America, especially at the time of elections. It divides the country and I think that we get in trouble when some people don't respect eachothers opinions. I like your joke about the mad cows. Maybe we can learn a thing or two about Canada, but have a lil compassion for us in the US who just "came through" an election, and have since talked about very personal issues such as politics, religion and race....
I personally would like to see American's (and humans, in general) concentrate on what makes us alike and realize that what makes us different is what makes the world go around.

Thanks for your Canadian comments.
(ps. I hope that i don't get flamed for posting on a canadian post!! i say this in jest, but I have been accused recently of posting on pro-Kerry threads when I'm a republican....last time I checked, America was a free country!!)

Rasbury - I think that is an interesting perspective:
"have a lil compassion for us in the US who just "came through" an election, and have since talked about very personal issues such as politics, religion and race...."
Did other countries not just have elections? Did we in Canada not have an election this year too?
I don't get why there should be "compassion" shown to any members of any country that just "came through" an election. It is part of being a citizen of the country, and it is suppose to make the country stronger. Why compassion? Was America victomised in some way during this election year?
Coree - I am also proud to be Canadian, although I do wish that our politicians would get their heads out of their butts and do something about our health care system.

I too am ridiculously proud to be Canadian. We as people are so calm, passionate and forgiving.
I'm proud to be living in one of the most liberal places on earth. We're bunch of gay-marriage letting, pot-legalizing tree huggers out here on the west coast and I wouldn't have it any other way. People, not government should dictate their own morals and live by them.

America is a free country (so is Canada by the way...) of course, but respect should always trump your "ability" to put in your two-cents. I've seen you on the boards the last few days being really forceful in your beliefs, even in the anti-Bush thread. Yes, you can post on any thread you want, put should you? People were looking to vent and "heal" and that's it. Most of us didn't go over to the "W wins" post even though some of the stuff said was absolutely asinine (in my opinion...free country remember?). Live and let live. Every post that you disagree with is not an opportunity to debate or challenge people's views. Or it shouldn't be anyways...
I'm not trying to slam you, honestly. Just giving you a different perspective since you acted a little bit persecuted in this thread.

I posted on this thread, in part, because of the first post indicating canadian pride and that you were a peaceable people. I made sure (i thought) to be non-offensive, have nothing that could be debated and make the comment that maybe we, as americans, could learn a thing or two from Canada. I thought that was a compliment. I thought it would come off as my thanks to you. Maybe I felt safe to post here bc I wouldn't be attacked.
I indicated that MAYBE we were so passionate about the issue because we just came through an election, meaning came through it within the last few days. I can't speak about Canadian elections bc I'm not Canadian and I've been on soul cysters just a few months. I can't tell you if there was any debate about Canadian elections bc I just simply wasn't around. If there was no debates or bickering or forceful opinions, then Bravo Canada!
So Bethers, please forgive me for asking for compassion for America. I was asking for a little bit of understanding at a time where it feels so crazy over here. Perhaps it was the wrong wording. At the time it felt like a safe thing to say, but I was wrong, as is evident by the response you gave me. I'm sorry that you took it to mean that I felt like America was victimized. I do believe that elections make a country stronger, but so soon after this recent election, a lot of American's are divided (as is evident across the forums lately). It's simply how I'm feeling it. It's my perspective.
SH, I do feel that my opinions are respectful. If you care to look back at anything I've posted, you'll see that at times I'm emotional but never disrespectful to someone elses beliefs or opinions. If you consider that to be forceful, I feel really bad about coming across the way that I have. I can't tell you how many times I've come to the computer in the last couple of days and logged onto Soul Cysters to leave in tears. I'm trying to "heal" too. I have tried to hear and take in opinions from both sides of the fence and add my opinion where I thought I could bring something to the table. For every one time I post something on a "heated" thread, there are 10 times that I choose to leave it alone.
Words on a thread are not always conveyed well. My comment about America being a free country was typed with a big ol' smile. I get reminded that Canada is too, as if I was implying that it wasn't. If I can clarify, I meant that we are free to post where we want, respectfully and with judgement. Like I said at the beginning, I thought it was safe to post here. Please tell me I'm wrong if I was wrong. If I used horrible judgement tell me. If I disrespected Canada, tell me. I'm really drained. I feel unwelcomed. I'm sorry Canada. I truly am.

I am VERY thank-ful to be Canadian!

I never said that you were disrespectful to anyone. I said that respect should always trump your "ability" to put in your two-cents. Meaning that just letting people vent and hash out their feelings without throwing your opinion in shows the other posters a great deal of respect. That's it. Let people vent. Plain and simple.
And the free country line is a massive pet peeve of mine. You're right. America is a free country. Meaning you can stand in your front lawn and yell out your opinion on a variety of subjects if you so choose. In a moderated community though, it seems like it's used as a crutch. It's almost like "here's my opinion - this might not be the time and place for me to respectfully say it but - it's a free country so I'm going to say it anyways."
It's a big ole BUT in my opinion.
And don't feel unwelcomed - it's the INTERNET! Take from it what you will and add to it what you want. Just know that not everyone wants to have to defend themselves when they're venting about something as serious as their morals and beliefs.

Agreed SH. Thanks for your comments. I agree with you about letting people vent without throwing in opinions where they don't belong. I took issue over the last few days where certain groups or ethnicities were being bashed in vents and there were some places where I couldn't keep my opinion quiet. I've since become quieter and quieter over the last few days, even as some threads rage on that upset me in the first place. There are threads I won't open when I see the title. Letting go is a powerful thing.
And yes, it is the internet, but it doesn't mean that feelings can't get hurt. I've never (intentionally or otherwise) put anyone in the position to defend their morals or beliefs. I'd like to think that I've helped more then I've hurt here on SC's. Again, thanks for your comments.

Dreamy,
I believe the boots your talking about were from Payless shoes. I recommended that my SIL check them out because she also has problems finding nice boots that fit.

We're bunch of gay-marriage letting, pot-legalizing tree huggers...
And yet I still love this country. I disagree with so much of what I see happening in our government (both federally and provincially), and the often general guttlesness of our "leaders," but this is the country I love and wouldn't dream of living anywhere else.

Stay on the east coast for sure then!
We're apparently much more open-minded out here!

Not so sure I'd be as quick to use the open/closed minded analogy, especially on someone you don't know. But hey, if the freedom to believe what I believe makes me closed minded in your eyes, it's no skin off my nose.
I heard a saying once that I just love, "Never be so open minded that your common sense falls out." I do my best to live by that. And in Canada, it's part of the freedom that we enjoy.

Being against gay marriage can't be anything other than closed minded in my opinion. I could care less who agrees with me. It's prejudice plain and simple and no amount of bible spewing can make it any different.
And yes, that's a lovely passive-agressive saying you've got there. I love how you equate gay marriage and pot legalizing to not having common sense.
