Hi everyone. I just got my first AF while on Provera. It came about 2 days after my last pill. However my cycle has been extremely heavy! Normally, when I get my period it takes me about 8 hours to saturate a regular tampon and today I did it in less then two hours! I keep having leaks! I wore a regualr absorbancy tampon, and also a super absorbancy pad and after only 2 1/2 hours I had a major leak! Is this to be expected? Did anyone else have this problem? Also I have really bad cramps:s but from reading all these posts I see that a fair amount of people do.
Thanks
Hello,
I took my first round of Provera last month and it was heavier than I remember it being, but then again, I haven't had AF for close to a year, so maybe I just can't remember what it was like. I did also have bad cramps this time, for several days. I do know that was worse than last time. I will be taking my 2nd round on the 20th of this month and then I will be starting on Clomid in May. Are you also going to be taking Clomid?

I'm starting Provera today, then going on to Clomid after AF. My doctor did say to expect a heavy period. But I don't think it was because of the drug. It was more because I haven't had a period in 6 months. In normal bodies, the lining of our uterus builds up each month, so the longer you go w/o a period, the heavier it will be after you take Provera.
No, if you do not have a period that means you are not ovulating. You are not producing the hormones to stimulate your follicles to release a mature egg. If you are not ovulating then the lining of the uterus does not build up and that's why you don't have a period. It doesn't accumulate over time. I would assume that your doctor said to expect a heavy period because of the Provera.
Tarain, no I will not be taking Clomid as far as I know. I'm seeing the doctor again in July so I wont know until then I guess. What is Clomid?
Clomid is used when you are trying to conceive. Sometimes they prescibe both Provera and Clomid if you are TTC, I wasn't sure if you were TTC or not.

Actually I'm only 17 So I think it's safe to say my parents would murder me if I was TTC. LOL Actually I was curious if Provera is as effective as regular birth control? I did some vague research on it and it is always described as birth control. Any information is appreciated. Thanks!
Sorry Bookworm, but I have to disagree with you. My doctor VERY clearly said that you can ovulate even if you are not getting a period. I never get a period, but I still everyone in a while have ovulation pains and actually got pregnant with my son. Maybe not everyone's lining continues to build each month, depending on their problem, but my doc said that it does, which is why she doesn't like anyone to go more than three months w/o a period, cause when you do get it after waiting a long time, many times it is very heavy. I've never heard about Provera making you period heavier, but it is a hormone, so I suppose it can do that as well. I've never heard provera used as birth control, either. If it is, I don't know how you would use it. I'm trying to get pregnant and my doc prescribed it, so??? Who knows?
Ya that's why I was confused. If women are having difficulty getting pregnant I wasn't sure why birth control would be prescribed but the endocrinolgist I saw told me that it was like birth control and all the research I did considered it birth control. Even though you only have to take it once everything three months. Apparently it works as birth control for that long. I was hoping someone else might have some information.
And from what I've heard from my doctor is that your lining can't accumulate because I asked a few different people about that. I'm not sure about the ovulation thing though, you're probably right about that. It's kinda confusing:S.
If you experienced a heavy cycle the first month on Provera...was it just as heavy the second month? I'm going to New York during my period and we'll be walking around a lot and I don't want to feel *blah* and be worried about it the whole time...
When are you going to New York? I am just starting my 2nd round of Provera today, so I wont know what the 2nd is like for about 12 days. I also wonder what this 2nd round is going to be like.

Okay, first, Provera is not birth control, nor is it used for it. I took Provera to get af, then got pg the same cylce. That alone proves that it is indeed not bc, nor will it work as bc for 3 months.
Second, you don't have to o to get af. I do not o on my own, but do have af occassionally. And trust me I've been at this Pcos for several years, so I know what I am talking about. I research everything before taking it.
Third, your lining does build up over time, and that is why your af is heavy.
If your re is so stupid as to advice you that Provera is bc, then you need a new re. And where are you doing your research that is says that Provera is bc? I fully researched Provera before I took it for the first time, which was in Jan. and no where did it say anything about it being bc. I don't think things change that much in just a few months.
Provera is a progesterone that tricks your body into thinking that you have an egg that was not fertilized, thus you start af.
Plus, Provera is typically given to women that are ttc so that they will start a new cycle, thus shedding there lining, and grow a new freash lining, which will help an egg implant. If you have Pcos and no period, then they would have put you on bcp or Glucophage to regulate your period.
Don't count on this as bcp, or you my just surprise your parents and make them grandparents!
That's what I was thinking. You got depo-provera and provera confused. Provera is progesterone (pill?), like the progesterone creams out. Depo-provera is bc in injection form. I did the depo shots 2xs for a year each. I didnt have my periods the whole time, plus the second time I did depo is when I started gaining weight. At the time I had never heard of pcos, so everything was attributed to the depo-provera shots as they have a reputation of weight gain in some women. I've never quite been the same since, so I've harbored bad feelings toward depo-provera. As I'm seriously looking into provera+clomid for ttc, I'm anxious to find out what I can. I did the creams for a while not knowing they were giving me "false" periods. My re said that just because I bled doesnt mean I ovulate. She told me to give it 3 months off the cream and chart my cycles then we'd average out when/if I ovulate. Well, in 3 months, I've had 2 periods and they've been 1.5 month(ish) apart. So I meet with her the 12th of may and want to discuss provera and clomid and see if that's a viable next option. Plus I've been cramping consistantly when I dont menstruate and someone mentioned my ovaries might be working in double time, meaning they are producing more and more cysts. Anyway, we'll see.
