Question Provera for Irregular Bleeding

Hello,

From what i have read here, most girls have been put on Provera to induce a period, but my Gyno has put me on it to stop the constant bleeding/spotting i have been experiencing for the last 2-3 months. And it worked within 2 days, (however I think I prefer the bleeding to the pelvic pains and nausea especially since I have to take it for three weeks at a time... )

I wandered if anyone else has been given Provera for the same reason, or if there are other meds that might help minus the side-effects??

Thanks
Tollee

Hi Tollee,
I was given provera for the same reason as you. (to stop constant periods) I don't like the side effects either, but I was told by my GYN that I needed to take it because having a constant period for many months at a time can make you very sick, anemic, and I've heard it can cause endometriosis (don't know if this is true though)

The only other thing I've been put on that helped was birth control. Of course, from what I've been told, that just masks the problem.

Hope this helps,

How about using natural progesterone cream instead?
Look for it at a health store..
It's gentler on your body.. I used it recently to bring about my long-lost AF, but it will probably be helpful for you too, without the Provera side effects.

I was given a combination of Provera and Premarin to take for about 7 days to stop a 14 month bleed. After that, I took 10mg/day of Provera to help maintain the lining of my uterus because I had hyperplaysia. Now I take Micronor as a maintenance drug to prevent the hyperplaysia from returning.

Hi Tollee,
I was given Provera for the same problem. I never took it to start AF, I get that regular enough (45-50days) but last year my AF got longer and longer each month. (1.5 months was my record )

Provera got me feeling so PMS-ed, it was horrid.
And I didn't realise that I'd have to keep taking Provera to keep AF away. So, I ended up taking it for a few days, stopped, had a regular 4 day AF, then went on with my cycle.

Boy, this PCOS is complicated.

I took provera every day for about 3 years. What lead up to that was bleeding every day...I'm not kidding...every day up to the point that I was hemorrhaging and had to have a D and C. Nothing. even taking 5 pills a day of the strongest birth control would stop the demon! Doctor basically called it a chemical menopause. She took me off because longterm it affects your lipids somehow and put me bc pills...no long term bleeding but few periods now. If I went longer than 3 months on bc pills without AF, she would do provera withdrawal to induce. Now that I'm ttc, I'm seeing a specialist and he still uses it to induce.

I'm only newly dx'd and I was starting to think I was the only one with this strange problem... Thanks for your replies, I sympathize with you all...

I've been back to my dr since, and she changed her management - told me to stop the pills, (I'd already finished the rx'd course anyway).... and now I have this horrible heavy clotty period (sorry - yuck!!!) Hopefully it will only be for the next few days, and not go on and on like it was before... Hopefully I'm feeling yucking now because I am surposed to and this is actually "normal"???? I don't think I have EVER had a "normal" cycle, execpt while on BCP, but now ttc, so they aren't much help!! Wish me luck for next month, maybe this might have been enough to regulate me!!!!!
