I have a thick uterine lining, and my GYN wants to do a D&C, but I want to ask her about trying to induce AF first. I have been reading posts about all the different menses-inducing meds, and I'm liking provera & prometrium. Which one would you guys recommend? What are the side effects, etc.? I have no clue about either of them since I'm newly diagnosed. Thanks!
Prometrium is a natural progesterone, and Provera is a synthetic progesterone. They are usually taken for 10 days, but some woman take them for 5 days. Many woman say that Prometrium is easier on the system.
However, if your lining is thick then it will probably be a bad AF regardless of which one you use (Just forewarning.) I know the longer I wait for AF the more painful it is, so... if you use pills, instead of the D&C, make sure you have pain meds on hand (Naproxen Sodium seems to help me.)
What either of the pills do is trick the body into thinking you have ovulated (Since they are progesterone, the hormone your body naturally makes after ovulation.) Well, your body will absorb it, and then once you stop, the amount in your body will decrease. Eventually your body will start shedding the lining due to lack of progesterone (This is called a progesterone withdraw bleed.) It's not really a period, because you have not ovulated. But it is a shedding of the lining, so it does the same thing, just artificially.
Some woman will start while still on the pill, some woman take up to two weeks. I usually take 4 days after Prometrium, and anywhere from the 8th pill, to 3 days after the pills, with Provera.
Hope that helps.

I just wanted to add that I've always taken prometrium (as that is what both my OB and RE give me scripts for). The only precaution I would give is make sure you take it at night right before going to bed. It literally makes me feel drunk - woozy, dizzy, etc. I'm hardly able to walk once I take it. The good thing is that I always sleep good when I take it.

I just did 10 days of Provera (last pill taken 4/21 in the eve) for the first time. Somethings I noticed for me (and I'm sure it's a bit different for everyone). The first 2-3 days I had nausea and dizziness within an hour of taking the pill.
Twice I had bad migraines, not sure if it's related.
And for days 1-10 I was much more emotional and a bit paranoid. I also noticed around days 8-10 more abdominal tenderness and bloating.
The good news, the morning of 4/23 AF began.
The bad news -- it is the most painful AF I have ever had.
But it is worth it to have it and I'm grateful.
My thoughts on the Provera, take it in the evening before bed and make sure it's at the same time each day because the first few days the nausea and dizziness didn't matter much after I went to sleep. Also, drink lots of water with it. That seemed to minimize the side effects.
If I have to do this again I think I'd ask for Prometrium and see if I have less side effects.
Has anyone experienced taking Provera and not having AF come? I finished my 5 day Provera treatment on Saturday, April 18th (so 10 days ago) and still no AF. I don't know what's going on?!?! Any thoughts?

I'm not for sure or if it applies for you, but the reason I just took Provera for 10-days was not because I was in need of AF. Instead it was part of a medical test that my ob/gyn wanted to do.
She said if it causes AF to come or if it doesn't will tell her somethings about what my brain is doing. I'm not sure what that means, only that for me it brought on AF. I will see her again this thursday and find out. I'm still very new to this.
thanks kimmyjo...i called and left a message for my doc this morning but it always takes her a few days to get back to me. it seems strange that it wouldn't work for me...i'm like, 'great what's wrong now?'
