This is a little complicated, so please bear with me. I was prescribed Provera (for 10 days) + Metformin (1500/day) 2 months ago, although my cycles were somewhat normal (ranging 34-38 days). My cycles were getting longer and longer, the further I got away from having been on BC pills. My doc out me on the Provera, as he wanted to make sure I had regular cycles. So, I took the Provera and got my period on the 3rd day (8/21/07). Called the doc and nurse said to keep taking it for the full 10 days. At the end of the 10 days, I got my period a second time. Also, I was an absolute emotional wreck on the Provera, making TTC even more difficult, as my moodiness wasn't exactly a turn-on. I decided I didn't want to take the Provera again, because of my reaction and since it seemed that I could get periods without it. However, my last period (the one I got from the Provera) was 9/4/07. My doc just prescribed Clomid and I'm anxious to take it, so I took the Provera again, since now I'm worried about when my period will come (it's been 6 weeks!). At my request, my doc said I could take the Provera for 5 days, instead of 10. Yesterday was the 5th day. I'm a little worried that 5 days won't be enough to start my period and then what do I do? Has anyone had success using it for 5 days? Should I just keep taking it for 10? Thanks!
I'll be honest that I don't know a whole lot about this stuff (still learning about PCOS), but I will say that when I used to take Provera I took it for 10 days as well and it took about 1-2 weeks to bring on my period. The last two times I took it I had severe side effects from it and only took it 1 day; within 1 week I had a normal 7-day period. I thought it was very strange it only took 1 pill to get things going.
Looks like we've all got Provera questions today! I'm only on day 4 of a 10 day prescription and I've got bad cramps. Its been a while since I've taken Provera but I sure don't remember symptoms this early. Anyways, I don't wanna hijack your post.
In response to your question, I've never heard of anyone taking Provera for just 5 days. Hopefully somebody will pipe in with a little bit of insight for you.
Best of luck to you!

I went to the gyn today and he said that if I get AF before I am done with the Provera to stop the pills and just have my period.
I always have success with 5 days.

I just finished a 10d course of provera. You can stop provera as soon as AF appears b/c it means it was almost time for your cycle anyway. My AF started on day 10 and lasted for 7 days. It can take up to two weeks after the 10d course for AF to begin. My cramps started on day 2 and were the worst, unrelenting cramps i have ever experienced. They lasted through day 7. However, I had no cramping with AF. AF was especially heavy and long in duration.
Provera did it's job, but I'm not sure it's for me. But bottom line, you can stop as soon as AF appears.
Just a follow-up. Five days has been working out fine, which is good, because the side effects have been awful! Not sure why docs prescribe it for 10 when you get the same result taking it for 5.
