Default Provera Question

I searched thru all the threads and couldn't seem to find the answer to my questions so if this has been asked before please forgive me

My Dr prescribed me Provera on Monday because i've only had 2 periods all year. One in Feb and one last week.

She told me to wait about 6 weeks and if I haven't had a period on my own to take the provera.

We aren't currently TTC, we're wanting to wait until June/July. But my question is this....could I still ovulate while taking Provera?? She said i'm probably not ovulating because of how irregular I am. She said charting my temp would be a waste of time because until I get regular I won't ovulate.

I don't know if maybe she only said it would be a waste of time because we aren't actively trying or if it really is a waste of my time.

Even though we aren't actively trying I would like to know if i'm ovulating.

I don't know what I would start charting though while on Provera.

So I guess my questions are....Can I ovulate while taking Provera?? Should I start charting my temp just in case or at least to get used to it? And when would I start charting? Or does that matter?

Also when would you suggest I start taking the provera, I wanna get this going so i've been tempted to start it early but I did just have a period end on Saturday so I don't wanna mess anything up even more. I'm just ready to get things started ya know.

Well I hope this wasn't totally confusing, I just have so many thoughts running thru my head lol.

Oh and I should mention that I do not have PCOS, been tested but do not have it. I just found this board a few months ago and found so much useful info on here that I just had to join

Thanks in advance for any advice, suggestions, help you can offer!

Provera will just bring on AF. Your doctor only wants you to take it if AF doesn't come on her own...thats why she wants you to wait the 6 weeks before taking it. It doesn't make you ovulate...If your going to ovulate it would be after provera brings on a period.

Could Medroxyprogesterone make your basal temp increase? Each day my temp has increased and I'm wondering If I'm actually ovulating? Or if it's just the progesterone? It's been 85 days since my last period so my doc wants me to take this to bring on AF. I also started taking Metformin. I've been tracking my temp for months and the highest I've seen is 97.1 and the lowest is 95.9. Normally it's 96.5. Since taking the Medroxy Progesterone & Metformin it's been 97.0, 96.9, 97.3, 97.5. It's only been 4 days. Any thoughts? I'm really confused!

It could rise with the Provera. There is a recent related thread in the Infertility section.

When was your last period? If its been more than 6 weeks or so I can't see why it would hurt to go ahead and start the provera now.

Edit: NM I see it now. If your period was just last week, there is no reason to take it now. I agree with your doc.

Hi!

I have the same problem, but this is my 5th time taking Provera and it's my 4th day after the last pill and no period. Usually after the 2d pill I get it, I'm really worried.

I think the Medroxy Progesterone does increase your basal temp. I thought I was ovulating but I guess not. I woke up to Aunt Flow today :0)
Do you track your basal temp? I checked it today before I got up and it decreased. Just give it a couple more days and you'll probably get it. Don't worry. Are you ttc?

same here... for the past 3 months i've taken progesterone, 10 days. and on the 11th of the past months i've started AF, now, its the 14th and still no AF. i took a test on wed 11/11 BFN and again today 11/14 still BFN. i've read that it can take up to 2 weeks to get AF, but i'm impatient and used to getting it on the 11th. I talked to a doc that i work with and she said it could be nothing, that it can take some time. But i dunno... My breasts are REALLY tender too, and they get a little tender before AF but never this bad, thats why i thought i was pg, but, obviously, i'm not. i have a dr appt on the 23rd, so hopefully i can get this all cleared up, cuz its so damn frustrating!!!

PidG78 - You can ovulate after taking PRovera. My first BFP was after conceiving after a round of Provera after stopping BCPs (I did miscarry though).

Mferguson - My first and second BFPs came after I got negative HPTs. You could catch it a wee bit too early for the HCG to register if not strong yet....if you get a negative, wait at least another week before testing again.

Good luck!
