Default Provera Questions

Hi, ladies. I've read a lot of the Provera threads, but haven't found exactly what I'm looking for. I went off BCP on 2/1/08, and my last period was 1/31/08. I'm currently on CD 69 and we are TTC. My doctor has called in 5mg of progesterone to the pharmacy for me, so I'm doing a little research. Here are my questions:
1. I used natural progesterone cream for a week to try to start AF, and it didn't work. I wasn't able to do it longer because the cramps were HORRID. If that was 20mg 2x daily through the skin, and the pill is 5mg, is this even possibly going to work?
2. I've taken three HPTs on CD 47, 48, and 62. My chart looks annovulatory, but it was always a chance. Should I take another one in the AM just to be on the safe side, or do you think we've covered our bases?
3. If AF starts before you've finished 10 pills, do you continue with the rest, or quit?
Thanks so much for any help you can give me!

1. the pills and creams seems to be very different things and the post below me explains in detail

2. I would not start any cycle of provera without a blood HCG test first, and hopefully more than one confirming thing saying that you did not O. They can also do a progesterone test to help verify that.

3. Af starting when you are still onthe pills is rare but does happen, remember that you do not bleed from the provra but rather the withdrawl from it. So it would lead to the thinking htat is you bleed when still on it, you were going to anyway, or your dose fluctuated (missed a dose) and you were very suseptible to that.

I am taking on poll on Provera in the Medication Forum, it is talking about what to expect. might be helpful for you.

Poll: How many days after Provera did AF start for you?

#1 Natural vs Synthetic will not be the same even dosage wise. You were taking 20mg of NATURAL Progesterone, if you were using a good USP grade cream then the absorbtion is BETTER than the pill. It gets absorbed straight to the fat cell until it is needed by your body.

Provera is NOT NOT NOT Progesterone. If you look it up in the PDR it is a SYNTHETIC form of the hormone called Progestin. (Most DOCS will say it is Progesterone because they are told that by the drug maker so they can make more $$$. Do your research...Google Provera vs Prometrium) It WILL not act the same way the natural hormone because they are not the same. If you get PG while taking PROGESTIN you will most likely lose the baby, if you get PG on Natural Progesterone then you will reduce the chance of M/C and preterm labor as long as you use it.
PRO - GESTATION is what progesterone means. It IS the PG hormone. Provera is the Rx version and given to just induce a period. This basically the B/C pill without the estrogen. The dose of any Rx will always be lower because it is a potent DRUG not a natural substance.

If you want Real Progesterone just ask your OB for Prometrium. It is a natural form of the hormone in a 200mg pill. If you take it orally you will only get 20mg in the end because the liver blocks the rest from entering the blood stream. So you will use the pill vaginally nightly before bed. You will absorb most if not all that way.

#2 You should always do a blood test for PG before starting Provera. If you are in early PG it can be compromised. That is why any women TTC should use the Prometrium just in case a PG does occur. She will safe guard her new PG by using the natural form. Many RE's are using Prometrium in IVF cycles because of the effect it has on keeping PG healthy. I myself can't hold a PG without using it through my WHOLE PG. I have used the cream form for over 4 years already. Through 2 PG, and monthly to balance out hormones and my PCOS.

#3 In a normal cycle our bodies would get AF due to a progesterone drop. So if you have been taking your pills like your supposed too then it would be rare for you to get AF while on the pills. This is true for both forms of the hormone.

All this info I learned from my OB who gave me the choice of natural or synthetic. I started on the Prometrium but learned that the liver gets bogged down with a lot of use, so I switched to the cream and that was enough to keep me for 4 years. Yesterday I just started the pills again because the cream I normally use was reformulated and my PCOS is starting to act up again so I need a higher dose until I can get my new cream. I am using the 200mg pills as suppositories. If you have any other questions feel free to email me. Terra
