I was just prescribed Prometrium so I still have some questions about the drug but I understand from my doctor is that it is more like natural progesterone. He says that He has had less complaints with side effects the biggest one was Drowsiness. Tghe Provera a lot of the women were complaining about being grumpy and paranoid. That's all I know for now.
I don't know the difference either, but I was given prometrium also, I suppose to take it every month, so i will see how it works, some time ago I took provera and all I remember is alot of cramps and af lasted for a very long time.
Karen, how much are you supost to take? I have to take 200mg for 12 days, and did you have to pay for it, I have insurance and it would not cover it I was told it would cost $80.00 for 3 months supply, my doctor gave samples for 2 months so I will try it see if I like it, and than I will buy it. How long has it been since you had af, its been over a year for me. so I'm crossing my fingers.

I was given samples of Prometrium. I will have to check tomorrow and Let you know if my Ins will cover this med. The sample is 200 mg. I had AF about 2 months ago that lasted 8 weeks. My DR says that I bleed long like that because I don't have AF but 2-3x a year, so we are going to try this med to see if it can help me. Deep down inside I I would be fine if it quit all together but seeing how that is not good for my body I guess I will just go with the med.
On the Provera I was an emotional mess. Totally paranoid and stressed and maybe even depressed as I could not concentrate.
I have just finished my first cycle of prometrium and I can honestly say, I feel much better.
Hope this helps!

i agree with santa's baby, I took prometrium last month and was perfectly fine. this month, I changed doctors and she gave me Provera...let me tell you. i am so depressed and paranoid, i dont know what to do with myself. i cant even function daily without getting into a slump. i hit my lowest yesterday when the idea of suicide crossed my mind. my loving husband helped me get over it. he is the best thing that has ever happened to me and I am grateful me was there. i hope this helps.

I am taking prometrium and havn't noticed any side effects. But in fact I havn't noticed anything. My doctor only has me taking it every 3 months... I am wondering if i should be taking it every month? When you take it monthly do you start the first day of your cycle???
My dr gave me provera in December to help start af and said that I could have af from 1 to 10 days and it could be painful because af hadn't been around for 5 months. I had to take if for 10 days and I think it was only 20mg or something small like that. I didn't to my knowledge have any problems with it. I only took it for two cycles. I may have been more emotional but I was just learning about PCOS and so that could have been alot to do with it as well. When I went back in February for a follow up my dr. switched me to prometruim. He said that it was more pregnancy friendly since I am TTC and could possibly get pg any month. I have taken prometruim once and haven't noticed any side effect.
I have actually had a different experience. I HATE prometrium. I have gotten horrible acne from it. Even as a teenager I did not have acne this bad. My doctor actually switched me to provera and it has worked much better for me. Another plus is that I only have to take it for 5 days and not 10 like with the prometrium. With either I find that symptoms are minimized when taken in the evening.
I was a mess with Provera. Cried and cried, yelling at everyone. Now I am on Prometrium and it is so much better. Not really any side effects emotionally. But I must take it at night. It makes me very drowsy and dizzy. The good thing is that it is okay to take the 12 day cycle every three months. It is okay not to have a period every month. As long as you have one every 3 months, then that is enough to shed the lining. I think someone asked a question about if it was okay to take it every three months. According to a lot of doctors it is perfectly fine.
prometrium works for me... provera like many of the pp have already said... made me cry, feel v. edgy/irritable, bloated blah blah blah....
prometrium is the same as natural progesterone except it's in a peanut oil "capsule"... and the dosage is standardized (which makes my dr. happy) I take it at night, and am fine in the a.m., usually I have much less muscle aches and sleep like a baby
Wow. I wonder what is up with me? I am glad that everybody has found that prometrium has helped them, but I wonder why the provera worked better for me? One more thing to make me feel odd. I honestly have done much better on the provera. Anybody know what makes the two different?
