Question Provera = worst period of my life

My last period was March 10th. After waiting and waiting I got a script for Provera. I took the Provera last week and on day 99 of my cycle AF started. Good grief. It is the most horrible period I have had. EVER.

This is worst that my post partum bleeding. The flooding. The bleeding through tampons and back up pads within a hour. The cramps. Oh My God this is horrible.

So is this from the Provera? or from the 99 day cycle and just having a really thick lining? or both?

Anyone else expereince this?

I once went 6 months (Yeah, really stupid of me.) without AF because I didn't realize the risks of not shedding the lining. So I was prescribed Provera.
It was horrible. I thought I was hemorrhaging. Worst cramps, worst bleeding, worst clots ever (TMI) I was going through tampons/pads just like you are.

So... I'm betting it's because you went awhile without it. The longer you go without the more lining there is to shed generally.

Hope it hurries up and gets over with for you.

My last period was in August 2007.
Should I be worried? o.o

I had a bad reaction to Provera as well. Horrible cramping, so much blood I thought I was going to need a transfusion. I thought maybe it was because I had gone a year without a period and it was just built up.
No.
I took it again the following month, and it did the same thing again.
I stopped taking it. It completely incapacitated me for several days when AF came. I've NEVER had to be out of commission when AF has arrived. Not until I took Provera.
The dr switched me to Prometrium, and it was a whole lot gentler. It gave me normal periods. What a relief!

journey18: You should generally not go without AF for more than 2 months I believe. It is unhealthy for the body and can raise the risks of getting uterine cancer. You need to see about talking to your doctor about getting a period. They'll probably put you on provera, or BCP if you aren't wanting to get pregnant. Either way they'll give you a bleed and help clear out the old lining.

I just got AF for the first time since my ectopic. On day 1 I thought I was going to bleed to death. I was going through the same thing as Kalico24. When I called my dr, she advised this was specifically to it being so long (CD53). She also told me that going too long could cause other problems such as cancerous cells to form. I have not researched that as yet, but will be doing so in the next week.

Kinda scared now.
I should be seeing my gynae soon so I'll ask them to put me on Provera, what is it like? Should I be scared? I haven't had a period in 9 months....

Thick lining or not, if they put me on Provera I bleed like CRAZY!!! I end up in so much pain I can barely move. My old doctor didn't believe me and told me I didn't have a choice....hence why I say OLD doctor....I moved on. My new doctor told me that he should have been more understanding and that YES I did have other choices. But yeah, Provera is not cool with me either.....

Journey: You can go to either your Gyn or PCP to get provera actually. They can give you prom. instead, as a PP mentioned. The Provera can be kinda harsh to some woman, it isn't always that way, but you do need to go get something to start AF. Don't be scared.
After you get AF make sure you get an AF every month or two from now on and hopefully you can find a method that doesn't bother you too much.

I have taken Prometrium in the past and my period were never this bad. I will not be taking Provera again. But I also will not be going this long without a period. 99 days was just way too long. But the provera does seem to make you just bleed more. (TMI ALERT) I expected big clots and such. But Nope. Just Blood and LOTS of it. I swear my Dh came in when I was trying to clean myself up after a "flood" and he said I needed to call Grisom from CSI because it looked like a crime scene! LOL! Yeah, I ended up showered and then cleaning the toilet, floor, rug, tub and sink to get rid of the evidence. But thankfully that only happened once. The rest of the time I have been able to keep it under better control.

On prometrium I get fewer PMS symptoms and less blood. Provera is just a kick @ss take no prisoners, harsh drug. It works, but it hurts! And I was so freaking emotional on the first 2 days of my cycle.

Anyway, you live and learn. And then you take Prometrium!

I've taken provera in the past and I had the same problems. Extremely heavy bleeding - so much that I thought I was going to become anemic, and horrific cramps. My cycles also lasted anywhere from 10 - 20 days, majority of which seemed to have the heavy bleeding, clots and cramps. I don't recommend it, but it was what was necessary at the time!

Gawd. That must have been awful.
But hey, it shows its working yeah?

I'm going to go and see another GP and ask to be put on it, so even though I aint seeing my gynae til september, hopefully the GP can prescribe it sooner.

I just hope it works and AF comes back.
But it sounds like it will from what I've heard of your experiences.

Hugs

I thought I would share,

so many people have had bad experiences with provera.... but it's always been pretty good to me actually. I've taken it with AF being MIA for 4 months at the most but, the periods haven't been as hectic as some of the replies here. I get just a heavy flow and no real cramps. So I hope that gives you some hope that its possible to take it and not think a river of blood is flowing from u
