My Mood: Points: 20,088.94 Bank: 7,313.56 Total Points: 27,402.50 | Psychiatrists! *please read* I know for some it is a hard thing to do, to admit you really need the help of a professional!
Some are just scared, and some are in denial about their problems!
YES there are some bad psych's out there, but there are excellent ones who can help you!
The best thing I ever did for myself was going to a psychiatrist and I am actually looking forward to seeing him again next month!
Depression meds alone cannot always solve your core issues! Besides regular doctors usually only perscribe the minimum doses of anti-depressants which may do nothing at all! Only a good psych can give you the right drug combo's. And did you know the only way to be diagnosed with depression and other disorders is a psychiatrist? Regular doc's are just guessing! Like in my case, my regular doc said I was depressed gave me a low dose of celexa and sent me on my way, turns out I have clinical depression and an anxiety disorder!
I guess what I am trying to say is stand stong for yourself and do this for you!
A good book recommended by my psych is " the feeling good handbook " it is good reading and has written exercises that really help you identify with yourself.

My Mood: Points: 2,197.45 Bank: 36,124.56 Total Points: 38,322.01 | I made an appointment yesterday with a psychiatrist for the first time. My mom tried to tell me just to go to my general doctor, because it would be "cheaper" ($20 copay as opposed to $40 for a specialist), but I decided I felt more comfortable seeing someone who actually specializes in mental health, not just someone who can write me a quick prescription.
My appointment is on the 28th of October (I wish it was sooner!) and I really don't know what to expect. The nurse on the phone asked me my symptoms, and I just said I thought I was depressed. I think I sounded really lame and pathetic :-P Oh well.

My Mood: Points: 1,629.85 Bank: 55,151.01 Total Points: 56,780.86 | i know it's scary to get into therapy/psychiatric treatment- it's just like closing your eyes and jumping into the murky water of your subconsious. it is not easy work. and you totally do not need the added stressor of worrying about your medications/paying for them. i recently found a resource for patients with no prescription coverage. https://www.pparx.org/Intro.php i applied through this website. you enter all of your medications into to form and answer a few questions. then it tells you which of the drug companies are offering assistance programs. then you print out the forms and fill them out. (i'm not going to lie- it is a lot of paperwork, because you need to fill out the information for each drug company.) you then take the forms to your doctor's office and they fill out a portion of it and submit it to the drug company for approval. http://www.nami.org/Content/ContentGroups/Helpline1/Prescription_Drug_Patient_Assistance_Programs.htm this is a link to a listing of the major drug companies and their websites indexed by medication name. and at the very bottom of the page is a link to more resources like the first link that i've posted.
let your doctor know about your financial concerns. be vocal; most md's i've worked with are willing to help out where they can. they get many free samples from drug companies, so they may be able to give you a week or two supply. or your doctor may be able to prescribe another less expensive drug in the same class of medication.
also, i've recently learned to ask for partial refills on my prescription. my newest psych medication, seroquel is around $200/month. often, psych meds get changed every couple of weeks due to side effects or lack of clinical response; if you only fill 2 weeks at a time you save money initally on the prescription and you won't have $100 dollars of extra medication to throw away if the md discontinues it.
*hugs* hope this helps. best of luck to you. |

My Mood: Points: 12,748.21 Bank: 106,491.90 Total Points: 119,240.11 | I started seeing a therapist back in September... I wasn't going because of depression, it was for other issues to start...
But it has brought up a lot a things about me, even though we've only just started scratching at them now and I am slowly seeing there is a light at the end of my tunnel and it's not a freight train coming to run me over, it's an enjoyable life for years to come, just have to make the trek down the tracks now... Opening old wounds again and now closing them properly... I am now slowly and I mean slowly finding myself again and knowing who I am...
Therapists are good, if you find the right one... I was scared the first day going, but I think everyone is... I always felt that therapists are for crazy people, but now I realize different... Although no knows I got to one except my DH...

Is there some questions to ask yourself to see if you should seek counseling?

Points: 8,280.89 Bank: 0.00 Total Points: 8,280.89 | If it is at all financially possible, if you think you need help, it certainly wouldn't hurt to go chat with a professional, imo. Worst case scenario, in exchange for an hour's time, you find out you're one of the relatively rare normal people
Without knowing what your concerns are, here's a link to a online depression screening that can help you figure out if you should see a professional: http://www.depression-screening.org/
I hope this helps

As for your boss, assuming you are in the US, you don't have to tell him what kind of medical appointment it is (I realize that doesn't help him being cranky about taking time off, but thought you'd like to know.)
While I can't personally vouch for this site, not having used it, I found this web cite with a collection of 1-800 numbers you can call to figure out how to go about getting help: http://www.nostigma.org/i_need_help_now.php
I hope this info. is of some help to you, and that you continue to take care of yourself.
