Scigurl, be careful with your doctor's dismissal...I was 29, in great health, and I never had a single pain in my leg. I didnt know I was having a PE until I stopped breathing. Doctors mean well, but they dont know everything...and they also arent always aware that ladies with PCOS hypercoagulate.

Seven years ago, after months of going to the ER and doctor with a left calf three times the size of my right calf, they finally admitted me to the hospital. I couldn't walk for weeks. I cried daily. My mom, who was 27 when she had her clot from taking BCP, knew that it was a clot in my leg. She could feel it. She wrapped it every morning with ace bandages to compress it so I could work. She applied heat to it every night to bring down the swelling. But for 4 months, I listened to doctors and nurses tell me that you can't have a clot in the small veins in your legs. The clots have to be in the larger veins in your thighs. They can't travel in the small veins. Gave me potassium pills; said my potassium was low. My heart started racing and I took myself off of those. LIARS! It was in my calf and I have the daily edema now to prove it! I was on ortho-tricyclen trying to regular my periods, stop the hair loss and reduce the beard. I thank God that I got on those peoples nerves enough for them to put me in the hospital.

Today, I take a St. Joseph's aspirin every day just as a precaution. I'm not sure if I have a blood disorder because the doctor's dropped the ball with my tests. I eat foods that are natural blood thinners. But I don't eat them often because of the aspirin.

Remember ladies! Doctor's practice medicine. Unfortunately, they practice on us. They really don't know anything other than what the books tell them. That's my experience and opinion.

Be careful cysters!

Default This is more common than I thought!!

I just posted this week about my nightmare through getting a PE in my lungs from the BC, (I have taken all kinds but for the last few months I've been on Balziva). I had no idea that so many women have suffered from this. My doctor has no explanation other than the BC for the blood clot, this thread makes me wonder if PCOS adds an additional factor to the equation that increases the risks for the blood clots??

I totally think PCOS increases the risk of blood clots. I see one of the top hematologists in the country since I began with clotting issue and even he doesn't have all the answers. I think the hormone fluctuations, etc. tend to put us at greater risk.

Bottom line for me:

---No birth control ever again. Not the pill, not the shot, not the ring, none of it!!!

---I have to be on blood thinners to take Provera and even Clomid (anything that screws with hormones)

---I have to be on blood thinners during pregnancy (should I ever get pregnant)

So, be careful ladies! Blood clots are not fun...and especially when combined with PCOS. Being on blood thinners and having a period=Depends and weekly iron iv's for me. Yuck!

Default I agree

Yea, I'm the same way. I can't take any birth control either. My GYN said that I can take Depo because it's a different kind of birth control hormone. The only problem is that it takes SO long to get out of your system that first dose was about a month ago, my next dose should be on January 11th but because I'm getting married January 16th and we're planning on kids pretty soon, I won't be taking it again. But ya know, I have done a ton of reading on Depo and there are TOO many bad sides to outweigh the good to be honest.

--I'm on Coumedin (blood thinners) now and I'll be on them for atleast the next 6 months not to mention when I get pregnant I have to go back to Lovonox (blood thinners that are injected into the abdomen but are safe during pregnancy. From what my GYN said, BC doubles your risk for blood clots, buts pregnancy multiplies that risk by 6. I never realized how serious this is but blood clots can kill you!

Yea the weekly blood tests aren't fun at all, my dr tests me to adjust my coumedin dosage..oy I hate doing blood work!!!
