I've got a question for those of you that had GD. Here's my situation:
I had GD with my first from week 22 on regualted with insulin, And now I'm on my second preg the Dr has had me monitoring my blood sugars since the begining to catch the GD when it first starts.
Bummer because now, I'm watching my fasting sugars climb up, averaging around 105. Not super high but still above the recommended range of 95.
My 2 hr after meal numbers are still great and low with proper eating and exercise but there's nothing I can do to adjust the fasting number, right? Have any of you all faced this situation? I'm thinking that the dr. will eventually prescribe insulin at night Oh, and I'm not on metformin either.
Thoughts?
Thanks, Chrissy

Sounds like you're on the right track to me! My GD was dx'd with my first baby until the typical time (30 weeks?) they order the test, and my doctor wasn't very aggressive with treatment. I knew all the signs by my 2nd pregnancy, and started testing my blood sugars when I was symptomatic at 17 weeks. I was on insulin from then on and felt better than ever too!
Just keep doing what your doing...and let the docs decide when it's time.
Good luck!!

Chrissy ~ if it is only your fasting sugar, some drs will prescrible Glyburide. Usually one pill at night. This is common practice at my MFM. I would ask your doctor about it.

With my first daughter I was diagnosed with GD at about 33 weeks (I went for the test late) and my blood sugars were uncontrolled (even though I followed the diet)
With my second daughter, I had GD almost immediately. I felt sick and knew what it was so I used my meter from the first pregnancy and sure enough my sugars were out of wack. At 16weeks my sugars were once again uncontrolled, but his time I was put on insulin.
I don't think GD starts earlier, just think it is diagnosed earlier because they know it could be a problem. I know it sucks if they put you on insulin , but I would rather have to take insulin and have a healthy baby. My first daughter was big and bloated when she was born. She was a week early and was 8 lbs. The next day she was less bloated. My second daugther (the pregnancy I took the insulin) was 3 weeks early but she was a normal weight for being early 6lbs 5 oz. and was not bloated.
Good luck, I hope you don't have to take the insulin again.

Chrissy - I had GD with my daughter (she was born 2/22/07) . . . I could keep my after meal levels stable, but had a horrible time with my fasting levels. My OB recommended exercise before bed - a short walk, a few flights of stairs, and a snack of a protein and a carb right before bed (sometimes even in the middle of the night). So, I tried that - it worked a little, but eventually she put me on that Glyburide (sp?) pill which controlled it very well.

( lots of Menopur, metformin, accupuncture and 7% weight loss)
How many carbs are you having with your last meal and are you snacking between that meal and bedtime? If so, how many carbs in the snack?
If you lower the amount of carbs in your evening meal (don't go lower than 30g in a meal) and increase protein and fiber it might help. Try to make any bedtime snacks more protein than carb. And a walk after dinner always helps.
They might just put you on an oral med at bedtime -- not a bad solution, really.

I had gestational diabetes with both of my children. Both of them were monitered with a good diabetic diet (which I hated) and metformin. However, toward the end of my first pregnancy, my dr. was going to prescribe insulin, but dd decided to make an early appearance. For me, following a really low carb diet always helps.
I had GD with all 3 of my kids. The first 2 were diet controlled. The last one was diet controlled until I switched clinics and the high-risk OB's there were stricter about my fasting levels being below 90 (they were always below 100). I ended up taking Glyburide the last 4-6 weeks (can't remember exactly how long).
I agree with a protein snack at bedtime. That always helped me (until I had to get below 90, which was hard).
