Angry QMC Appointment disappointment!!!

Well, the day dawned and me and DH made our way to QMC.

WHAT A WASTE OF TIME AND EFFORT!!!

Basically I was asked a bunch of questions, weighed and my BP checked and left to wait for an hour or so. I then saw a doctor ( Mr Simmonsz I think), who proceeded to tell me that he couldn't treat me as my local health authority didn't allow NHS treatment of couples who already had a child!!! And anyway, as my BMI is 40, he wouldn't consider any action until it was below 30!!

I was then sent for an internal scan!! (THAT was an exsperience in itself!?!?) and the sonographer proceeded to tell me that my ovaries were normal (Size, appearance stc) and I had a normal, healthy lining of 6.4mm. Is that good? If it's not PCOS, what is it?

I am currently on day 29 and my P$ day 22 was only 1.4 so I guess I can't be PG ( surely the sonographer would have picked that out anyhow!?!). My last 2 AF's have showed up exactlt 28 days apart! The Dr says to carry on with metformin for the time being and to LOSE WEIGHT (suprise, suprise!!) and he wants to test DHs semen (LOVELY!). DH had a serious motorcycle accident in Feb and sustained some pretty horrific bruising to his tender parts, so there is some concern for the little swimmers health!!

So I guess its diets for me and a lot of saving up if I want to be treated privately. Has anyone else seen a more helpful Dr in or around Lincolnshire? Mt GPO is fantastic, but of course there is sonly so much he can do, and appointmets with him are like gold dust!!

Anyway, I'll keep posting. Wish me luck!!

Sheli

Whereabouts in Lincolnshire are you Sheli? I'm from just outside Lincoln myself, although thinking about it my docs is just inside the Nottinghamshire boarder, and I've not yet plucked up the courage to talk to my current doc about pcos, although the nurse at the practice where I was at university agreed with my that it is highly likely, then i left and moved away from there so I never got the ball rolling then. Wish I had. Now I am doing the loose some weight thing before I go back about it.

I'm sorry you had such a rotten time at the QMC.

The 'no living children' rule is something that I'd forgotten about. All my initial investigations were done privately (thanks to BUPA through work) so I've kind of slipped the net and am being treated now on the NHS (although I shouldn't be!). I still wouldn't get IVF though.

The weight issue is a tricky one - my BMI is 30 and should be much lower IIRC. Losing weight can make all the difference - some research has been done which says losing 10% of your body weight can be enough to kick start things again. The Metformin combined with a low or reduced carb diet and exercise is a pretty good combination to help you with this. I've found that I have to reduce my carbs with Met as I feel too grotty if I don't.

Miss Macpherson gave me 6 months on the Met. before trying anything else.

A scan at day 29 would be too early to detect pregnancy AFAIK, did you have any cysts/collapsing follicles?

Default scan

Thanks for your replies!!

Palsen - I am from Boston in Lincs. I would urge you to see your doc ASAP re treatment - things can only get worse without it!!

EmmaE - the sonographer said that she couldn't see ANY evidence of cysts on my ovaries and that I had a normal, healthy lining of 6.4mm. I don't really understand the significance of the lining thickness. I went back to my GP today and he seems very optimistic that if I can lose some weight (I am about +2stone since I conceived Lucie), things should right themselves. He asked me to go back in 3 months to review the situation. He also gave me the stuff for DH to do his semen sample here.

Maybe it would be worth me doing a HPT in a few days time? What do you think? Day 30 now - no PMS or anything!

Keep those replies coming

Speak to you soon

Well, long cycles are a normal part of PCOS - if you're day 22 prog was only 1.4 then you didn't ovulate on day 14/15 so you're not going to have a 28 day cycle - in other words you're probably not late yet. In fact you may not have ovulated yet!

I would hold off on the HPTs as they only stress you out - I must have spent £100's on them too.

Before I was diagnosed I would spend the end of every cycle (6-8 weeks long at the time) thinking I might be pg because of the length of the cycle. It was torture.

It would probably be worth seeing if you can get scanned through your cycle locally. This starts on day 13 ish and continues every couple of days until either you ovulate naturally or it becomes obvious that you don't ovulate naturally and you are given a trigger injection of HCG. This is helps everyone understand what's actually happening during your cycle.

For example, on Metformin alone I wasn't getting mature follicles until day 21-22 and so a day 21 prog. test would've been pointless. It also became obvious that although I had mature follicles, they weren't 'popping' so I needed a trigger. This may well be just what's happening with you.

I hope that helps a little!

Emma
